Otherwise, the further alternative is to make a spreadsheet with four columns of numbers (1-250; 251-500; 501-750; 751-1000), set the postcards 4 up and use one column for one postcard, another column for another postcard, etc.
Create the text frame for the numbers in InDesign and if there are more than one ticket per page, link them. Place the text file into the first frame with a shift click to auto flow and create new pages.
• Step 1. Start the new outline list by clicking Insert, Outline/Bullets… and choose a Legal outline style from the icon list (usually, there are four to choose from). Click OK. If you use the “Legal” outline style, this will insert a “1” in the document, at the left margin.
☼ It is easy to make quick, basic modifications to the appearance of the numbering scheme (e.g., add Tabs or Indents next to the number, letter, or bullet). See the customizing section below and the Tips section on indenting, outdenting, etc.

When you use text outline styles Insert, Outline…, Text) the Outline Property Bar displays on screen, which lets you expand, contract, promote, demote, move up/down, etc., so you have an automatic outline to work with, not just a fancy style.
• Step 5. In the sequential numbering in word field, place the cursor after all codes; that is, make sure it is to the right of the code labeled “Codes to the left are ON – Codes to the right are OFF.” (Just click inside the Contents field and move the cursor into position with the keys.)
Hi Scott, I had a question regarding the sequential numbering Apex example…I am looking to automatically restart the sequence every month, which is not a problem using your example (i.e. changing the year to month in the expression). However, I would also like to add in a condition for year, so that the sequence restarts for each month of each year (i.e. my problem is for example that Feb 2011 last sequence number is 5, and then in Feb 2012 this becomes 6, where I would like it to be 1). I am wondering what the syntax would be. Thanks in advance, Lawn.
Thank you very much. I learnt number seq from here and applied it on my transport booking pad and this save me hours of work. Now can you please show me how to do something like 120/12, then 120/13, 120/14 and so on with seq.
Rhia Wieclawek & Cassy Freeman. This is the solution I ended up with and so far its working well. The only problem is that I will have to manually configure this workflow at the start of each project but that’s not a big job.

You are able to customize the numbering scheme at any time: before, during or after you apply it. You can customize all nine heading levels or only the levels you are planning to use. Some fields in the Customize dialog box are the same as the Numbered List Customize dialog box. The fields unique to Outline Numbers are:
4. Type tool, place insertion cursor in the first text frame on page 1, (remember this frame is on the Master), apply your paragraph style you’ve just created, press and hold Return button as this will apply Paragraph Style and the cursor will jump to next frame.
You won’t use any of the standard List Number styles for SEQ field numbering. You need to create your own style if you want correct indentation and alignment with the tab position of the first word after the number. In this example, I’ll create a new style called Step Number, but you can call it whatever you want. In this example, I’ve also used the default settings for tab and hanging indent positions — you can change these later if you want.
Text Variable: There are several ways text variables can be used, the most common being style-based running header/footer variables. You can define and insert text variables via the Type menu: Text Variables.
Creates a sequence object and specifies its properties. A sequence is a user-defined schema bound object that generates a sequence of numeric values according to the specification with which the sequence was created. The sequence of numeric values is generated in an ascending or descending order at a defined interval and can be configured to restart (cycle) when exhausted. Sequences, unlike identity columns, are not associated with specific tables. Applications refer to a sequence object to retrieve its next value. The relationship between sequences and tables is controlled by the application. User applications can reference a sequence object and coordinate the values across multiple rows and tables.
Hello Bruce, I seem to be having a different problem altogether. I created my ticket in word using logos and text boxes as needed, ticket looks great. I followed your very clear instructions but when I did the Finish & Merge I got this message, “You cannot include DATA, NEXT, NEXTIF, or SKIPIF fields in comments, headers, footers, footnotes or endnotes.” I then click on OK and get this, “A field calculation error occurred in record 1. Bruce any help would be much appreciated. Thank you!!
Your selection is already displayed in the text box on the right and Formatted text is already selected. In the Replace text box, type 1] (Why ‘1]’? Because you’re unlikely to use this sequence of characters in normal writing, and because it’s what David Knopf suggested back in his original article — and why change something that works?)
What I need the new LISP to do is append a space and then a number to the existing tag value in the block, so that the result would look like “ADDRESS: 1”, “ADDRESS: 2”, “ADDRESS 3” or “ELEVATION: 1″, ELEVATION: 2”, etc. depending on whatever the default value for the tag “ID” is.
Thanks for this tip, it is close to what I need in my requirement specification – but my problem is that I need the (requirement-)numbers to be allocated once a requirement is defined, and then stay with that value ‘forever’, and at the same time be sure to have unique (requirement-)numbers.
A sequence can be thought of as a list of elements with a particular order. Sequences are useful in a number of mathematical disciplines for studying functions, spaces, and other mathematical structures using the convergence properties of sequences. In particular, sequences are the basis for series, which are important in differential equations and analysis. Sequences are also of interest in their own right and can be studied as patterns or puzzles, such as in the study of prime numbers.
CK Note: I strongly advise attaching your numbering levels to styles for all levels at one time. See the articles by John McGhie and Shauna Kelly listed above. McGhie’s article explains the why of this, the Kelly Article gives step-by-step instructions.
When a sequence object uses the CACHE option, if you restart the sequence object, or alter the INCREMENT, CYCLE, MINVALUE, MAXVALUE, or the cache size properties, it will cause the cache to be written to the system tables before the change occurs. Then the cache is reloaded starting with the current value (i.e. no numbers are skipped). Changing the cache size takes effect immediately.
Whether you’re prepping for a concert, a school play, a sports event or another show, tickets help you control the crowd and keep track of an audience. Instead of buying generic tear-off tickets from a store, design custom tickets in Microsoft Publisher, the Microsoft Office suite’s desktop-publishing layout and design program. With a couple of quick clicks, you’ll have a way to create tickets in a specific order, which may be “just the ticket” for your event.
The next step is to create the simple Excel workbook that contains the ticket numbers. Open a blank Excel sheet. Using Figure B as a guide, create the ticket numbering sheet and save it, making sure to note the new workbook’s name and location. As we discussed earlier, the Excel workbook stores the ticket numbers. In this example, we’ll create 11 tickets numbered 100 through 110. You’ll need to update the ticket values for each merge.
OK I found the ControlSource property but it is on the Job No text box, do I enter the code there or am I entering my code on the button I created to save and get new number? If I put it behind the button, when I open the form it goes to the first record so I go to the last record and hit save get new number button and it gives me the number 1……Is it because when I open the form it goes to the first record and not a new record????
Design your ticket, use excel or libre’s version and create the numbers. Save those numbers as text, I always make the first one xxx then 001 and so on, xxx will be the master page. Use data merge from Indesign to create the master ticket, you will need to make a text box for the number. Once it looks good to you draw a text box around the whole ticket. At the bottom of the data merge tab is a button that gives you the options how you want your layout, columns or rows, etc. even has a preview. once you click create it will create another file with all your tickets sequentially numbered. It’ll be a couple of hours before I’m at work but can post the link I used to create these for the first couple of times.

If you need to apply numbering within a paragraph rather than to the entire paragraph, you use Word’s ListNum feature. Using the ListNum feature will allow you to take advantage of the numbering system you’re currently using in your document (it will use the one you implemented most recently if you’re not currently using a numbering system). The ListNum Field is available in Word 97 and later and interacts with multi-level list numbering (which should be linked to styles as set forth here). Here is a brief explanation of differences between the ListNum field and the Seq field.
For example, to create a “Figure A” effect, enter the word “Figure” and a space before the numbering metacharacters (such as Figure ^#.^t). This adds the word “Figure” followed by a sequential number (^#), a period, and a tab (^t).

Readers familiar with my articles will be aware that I have made InDesign’s Data Merge feature do some useful and sometimes unusual things, but the majority of my day-to-day work using Data Merge is sequentially numbered stationery.
