Note 1: It might be better to place this “Outline toggling” button on the main toolbar or on the Outline Tools bar (right-click the toolbar area and select Outline Tools) because the Outline property bar will disappear — and the new button with it — whenever an outline item is converted to normal body text. You won’t be able to use it to turn outlining back on for that item since the Outline property bar will not be visible. But if the button is on the main toolbar or you have made Outline Tools visible, you will have access to this button.

¤  This is a “sticky” setting, so it will remain turned off until you turn it on again. [WordPerfect might even turn it off if you are working on a merge or editing a macro. Some find this annoying (I do), so you can use the QC macro to turn it — and many other QuickCorrect settings — on and off as needed.]

You cannot use the Type tool to select the bullets or numbers in a list. Instead, edit their formatting and indent spacing using the Bullets And Numbering dialog box, the Paragraph panel, or the Bullets And Numbering section of the Paragraph Styles dialog box (if the bullets or numbers are part a style).

For example, you would like to have your first level of numbering to be Bold and Centered. In the previous section, you experienced that when you used Outline Numbering alone, you had to format each paragraph individually to be centered. When you use styles, the centering takes place automatically once you’ve defined the style to be centered.

If you have a SQL Server backend, you could just use the windows function ROW_NUMBER() and define it as a part of a SQL Server view. This is probably the simplest, no-nonsense method that works well for any purposes. This was introduced in SQL Server 2005 so chances are high you can use it if you can create views.

This also either requires 3 separate saved queries or 3 separate calls to DAO.Database.Execute methods, for each SQL statement, in addition to handling the error when the temporary table doesn’t exist. The simplest and clean method for this case could be this following VBA code:

I want to print 500 tickets, 4 to a page, each with a sequential number. I am using MS Publisher 2010. I have set up the database (numbers 1 to 500) and exected mail merge but on one page all 4 tickets have the same number. Can any one solve this problem?

With each successive reprint, the publisher needs to instruct the printer to change the impression number. In practice, if the plates (in offset printing) have been kept, a number can be erased, but nothing can be added. In this arrangement, all the printer must do is “rub off” the last number in sequence. Changing only the outer number requires the fewest possible changes to the page of characters, which means the smallest possible charge to the publisher. In the days of letterpress printing, where each character was a metal block, all the printer had to do was to pick out the relevant blocks from the “sheet”; then the stack of blocks, which had been laboriously laid out when the page was first set up, could be inked for the reprint.[1] In the case of a Linotype slug, the lowest number could be filed off and the slug reused. For offset printing with metal plates, the number can be erased without damaging the rest of the plate. In each case, the change is minimal.

You can easily maintain the jump lines of stories that continue to other pages, such as a line that says “Continued on page 42.” Use a jump line page number to automatically update the number of the page containing a story’s next or previous threaded text frame when you move or reflow the story’s threaded text frames.

Entering an SEQ field manually is easy enough, but if you’re working with this field a lot, there’s a much easier way: You can use AutoCorrect to insert them into text. Create the AutoText entry as follows:

You may notice that when you are customizing an outline numbered list, you do not have an sequential numbering to set the value of the Tab that follows the number. You can only choose whether a tab, space, or nothing follows the number.

You won’t use any of the standard List Number styles for SEQ field numbering. You need to create your own style if you want correct indentation and alignment with the tab position of the first word after the number. In this example, I’ll create a new style called Step Number, but you can call it whatever you want. In this example, I’ve also used the default settings for tab and hanging indent positions — you can change these later if you want.

No, Since you will be starting with a 3 digit number initially, then you don’t need to use the Format function to pad with leading zeros. And since you won’t be using the Format function, then there will be no problem when the number goes to 4 digits.

Click Numbering in the Paragraph group. In Word 2003, Numbering is on the Formatting toolbar. At this point, you have a one-column table with one hundred rows displaying a sequential list of 1 to 100.

•  Click in the document location where you want to create a tally of the paragraphs (usually after any paragraph outline codes), then use Tools, Reference, Cross Reference and choose “Paragraph/Outline” as the Reference Type. In the Select Target field, type a target name such as “tally”. Then click Mark Target to insert the [Target] code into the document.

I’ve just tested this in a blank Word 2010 document and it works fine. In the AutoCorrect section, I explain that you only have to set up TWO auto corrects — one for 1] (which resets the first number of a sequence to 1), and one for n] which is used to add ALL subsequent numbers (‘n’ represents any number other than 1).

In the Mail Merge Recipients dialog, you have the opportunity to customize the list. We want all the numbers (Figure F), so don’t uncheck anything before clicking OK. When applying this method to your own work, remember that you can exclude recipients at this point.

I was referring to a numbering machine, not a press. The job could be output on a copier and then run through a separate numbering machine. We have that setup in our shop, it’s very simple and to just run through a numbering machine is very inexpensive.

Instead of a merge, use a page of labels with six SEQ fields set for different sequences and with an interval of 6. The first page would be your initial set of fields with numbering 1, 35, 69, 103, 137, and 171.

Formally, a subsequence of the sequence ( a n ) n ∈ N {\displaystyle (a_{n})_{n\in \mathbb {N} }} is any sequence of the form ( a n k ) k ∈ N {\displaystyle (a_{n_{k}})_{k\in \mathbb {N} }} , where ( n k ) k ∈ N {\displaystyle (n_{k})_{k\in \mathbb {N} }} is a strictly increasing sequence of positive integers.

“how to sequence page numbers in word |how to insert sequential page numbers in word”

How can I print 40 copies of a single page document with a serial number in the body? Serial numbers are like: ABCnn. Where ABC is fixed and nn=serial number from 1 to 40. BTW this is for word 2000 or 2003.

If the iProperty “Part Number” was not blank or the same as the file name (as Inventor default), then a question box would pop up asking if you would like to overwrite the part number.  If one were to select yes, then the following would happen.

Word uses styles to create Tables of Contents. A common practice in law firms is to generate outline numbered styles that have bold or underlined heading text immediately followed by paragraph text on the same line. Because the paragraph is formatted with a style, Word tries to place the entire paragraph in the Table of Contents.

Thanks very much for your prompt reply, which reassured me that I was on the right path. From having read various Help topics, I suspected that I’d have to use an Excel data source for the numbers. Fortunately, my knowledge of Excel was good enough to know about the drag and drop facility to create automatic sequential numbering, so the data source creation was easy. In the end, it was the mail merge (no surprises?) which proved a tad tricky, but I got there in the end. I’ve used MM many times and quite happily in Word documents, but for Publisher label format, it was of course a bit different. The important bit that I had to discover for myself was the significance of, after getting to the Print stage, going into Print options, to Publication & Paper Settings, and selecting Multiple Pages per Sheet (& in my case, also “Single-sided” cos my default of duplex printing had come up). But TA-DA!  All is fine now. Thanks very much again.

Most changes you make to the top ticket are automatically made on all the other tickets, too. No tiring copying and pasting needed. The template shows just 5 tickets, but once you have them looking the way you want, just multiply them using copy and paste.

In the Pages panel, double-click the section indicator icon  that appears above the page icon in the Pages panel. Or, select a page that uses a section marker, and choose Numbering & Section Options in the Pages panel menu.

Your selection is already displayed in the text box on the right and Formatted text is already selected. In the Replace text box, type 1] (Why ‘1]’? Because you’re unlikely to use this sequence of characters in normal writing, and because it’s what David Knopf suggested back in his original article — and why change something that works?)

A vehicle identification number (VIN) is a unique code, including a serial number, used by the automotive industry to identify individual motor vehicles, towed vehicles, motorcycles, scooters and mopeds, as defined in ISO 3779:2009.

If you want numbered headings to be underlined, but do not want a line under the number, it can be difficult if you don’t know how it works. This is because by default, the format of the number follows the format of the text that follows it. For example, let’s say you want to underline a paragraph in a Heading 2 style. Chances are it will look like this:

\*alphabetic This switch displays results as alphabetic characters. The result has the same case as the word “alphabetic” in the field code. For example, { SEQ appendix \* ALPHABETIC } displays B (instead of 2), and { SEQ appendix \* alphabetic } displays b.

Otherwise, you could, instead of a merge, use a page of labels with six SEQ fields set for different sequences and with an interval of 6. The first page would be your initial set of fields with numbering 1, 35, 69, 103, 137, and 171.

Number Position This affects how numbers line up in a document, whether they are right, left, or center aligned. For example, you may want decimals to align for lists with double-digit numbering and thus would choose Right alignment. Settings in this area do not affect the text however.

When you set the Set Value text box to a number, your list will start with that number; when Restart does not start with 1, it’s best to check and reset the Set Value text box according to the steps above.

You can automatically number items in your document. Most of you already know this. You can also automatically number figures, tables, illustrations, etc. If you decide to reorder those items, Word will automatically sequential numbering in word the numbers so that the are in the correct order.

In a legal document, it’s rare for every paragraph in the document to be numbered. Usually, you change between numbered paragraphs and non-numbered (plain) paragraphs of text. When Word sees you switching between these types of formats, it usually tries to help by restarting your numbered list back at “1” (or the first value of your list, such as “A”). There are a few different ways to make the number follow the last number of your paragraphs. In Word, this is called Continue from Previous List.

Single-page jobs — For example, multiple bank cheques for a client company will have a common background, but also elements unique to each bank, such as the name, bank account, contact information, etc. I use layers when designing my clients’ cheques for multiple banks in their distribution of dividend warrants among their shareholders.

VINs may be optically read with barcode scanners or digital cameras, or digitally read via OBD-II in newer vehicles. There are smartphone applications that can pass the VIN to websites to decode the VIN.

Word comes with some default Outline Numbering schemes that already have Styles attached but that doesn’t mean you are only limited to those styles or those schemes. For more information on styles, see the chapter on Styles.

I gets problems with this mechanism the opposite way round – I don’t want the lists to continue. I have a large document with multi-level numbering within tables – numbering at first level and lettered lists at second level.

Notice here that we need to surround CaseNumber with Single quotes since it’s a Text datatype. As in the other scenarios, The NZ function automatically restarts the sequence when a new CaseNumber is used. In this scenario we would want to check whether the CaseNumber has been entered before generating the sequence.

A multi-level list is a list that describes hierarchical relationships between the list paragraphs. These lists are also called outline lists because they resemble outlines. The list’s numbering scheme (as well as indentations) show rank as well as how items are subordinate to one another. You can tell where each paragraph fits in the list with respect to the paragraphs before and after it. You can include up to nine levels in a multi-level list.

CK NOTE: Before attempting troubleshooting, read the article listed in the additional reading “Word’s Numbering Explained.” After you read that article, you may also want to look at the following links to some discussions on the Microsoft newsgroups on numbering.

The year 1980 was encoded by some manufacturers, especially General Motors and Chrysler, as “A” (since the 17-digit VIN was not mandatory until 1981, and the “A” or zero was in the manufacturer’s pre-1981 placement in the VIN), yet Ford and AMC still used a zero for 1980. Subsequent years increment through the allowed letters, so that “Y” represents the year 2000. 2001 to 2009 are encoded as the digits 1 to 9, and subsequent years are encoded as “A”, “B”, “C”, etc.

•  Next, click in the location where you want the tally number to appear (e.g., just above the paragraph outline). Then click Mark in the Cross Reference dialog to insert the [Ref Para] code. A “?” appears in the document at the cursor location.

An alternative to writing the domain of a sequence in the subscript is to indicate the range of values that the index can take by listing its highest and lowest legal values. For example, the notation ( k 2 ) k = 1 10 {\displaystyle (k^{2})_{k=1}^{10}} denotes the ten-term sequence of squares ( 1 , 4 , 9 , . . . , 100 ) {\displaystyle (1,4,9,…,100)} . The limits ∞ {\displaystyle \infty } and − ∞ {\displaystyle -\infty } are allowed, but they do not represent valid values for the index, only the supremum or infimum of such values, respectively. For example, the sequence ( a n ) n = 1 ∞ {\displaystyle (a_{n})_{n=1}^{\infty }} is the same as the sequence ( a n ) n ∈ N {\displaystyle (a_{n})_{n\in \mathbb {N} }} , and does not contain an additional term “at infinity”. The sequence ( a n ) n = − ∞ ∞ {\displaystyle (a_{n})_{n=-\infty }^{\infty }} is a bi-infinite sequence, and can also be written as ( . . . , a − 1 , a 0 , a 1 , a 2 , . . . ) {\displaystyle (…,a_{-1},a_{0},a_{1},a_{2},…)} .

Note  Most of the formatting to numbered lists needs to be done from within the Bullets & Numbering dialog box. Otherwise, any change you make will only apply to the one paragraph instead of the entire list. The following table describes each of the items in the Customize dialog box and the function of each feature.

“creating numbered tickets in indesign cc -microsoft word consecutive numbers”

i have gone through the intersting discussions on this site. I am having a problem with foot notes in Adobe in design cs 4. when i pasted a fresh set of pages in a doc in- in design, the fn numbering starts from 1 all over again in the fresh set of pages. i am not able to insert foot notes manually, as it does not creat the space below the text. I am stuck for help

Remember that you must update the values in the sheet if you want to continue the numbering series with the next batch of tickets. For instance, if you want your next batch of tickets to start with 112, you’d open the workbook and change the value 100 to 112, and update the remaining values accordingly. Don’t forget to save the workbook after updating the values.

It can either be in the normal.dot template or in the template you’re using for the invoice. (It’s obviously better to use it in the invoice template so it works on any computer where the template is used.)

The first step is to set the page size for the job by starting a new document (File > New). By default, CorelDRAW starts a new document with one default layer named “Layer 1.” After you start a new document, make sure that the Object Manager docker is open (if not, click Window > Dockers > Object Manager).

You can automatically number items in your document. Most of you already know this. You can also automatically number figures, tables, illustrations, etc. If you decide to reorder those items, Word will automatically update the numbers so that the are in the correct order.

As you can see, the sequence name can be most anything (e.g. mySeq, A, B, or Bob’s_your_uncle). If you start a sequence with a new sequence name the numbering restarts with 1. Look at Mary’s first chore in the right hand column. Here you see the reset switch \r1 was used. This switch directs Word to restart the sequence named “A” with “1” at this point.

Warning  Do not delete the number that appears in the Number Format box. If you do so accidentally, select a number style from the Number Style drop-down list to put it back. If the Overtype feature is active, this will cause the number to be easily deleted.

Note  By default, Word follows the number with a tab that is set at 0.25″ after the number. If you set your Indent Position to be larger than the Number Position, this will control the position of the tab after the number as well as the text that follows it. But if you want text to wrap back to the margin, the default 0.25″ tab will appear.

Bibliographers usually define a first edition as all printings from substantially the same type setting, no matter how many printings are done. Book collectors tend to define first edition as the first printing of the first edition. See “Edition (book)”.

Now repeat for the second and third tickets. But not the fourth, because that’s at the end of the page, so Word will skip to the next number anyway, because the next page always gets the next item in your merge list. Your document should look like this:

Pencil icon — toggles the editability of the layer. Enabling the pencil icon lets you select and edit the objects on the layer; disabling it locks the objects and prevents them from being selected or edited.

Now, as mentioned in my blog, your sequential number should be stored in a separate field with a datatype of Long Integer. You can use your Artifact ID field where I was using Sequence, but make sure its the correct datatype. Now, when you want to DISPLAY the combination of Collection Point ID and Artifact ID you use an expression:

Headers and footers run through the top and bottom of the pages in your document, providing important background information. To create a simple header or footer that includes page numbering, see Add basic page numbering.

Logo & Month: The masthead and the name of the month are placed on this layer. This layer is third from the bottom in the layer sequence. Each page has a different month and different color for the company name (Figure 6).

I have done this twice now, getting flustered. The ticket part the person keeps has the correct sequential number on it, but the side that we keep has the same number on it for the whole page. What part am I missing, at first I did not uncheck the box, but this time I did but have the same number on the stub side that we keep with the person’s name, etc

The list of bullet characters is stored in the document, like paragraph and character styles. When you paste or load paragraph styles from another document, any bullet character used in those styles appears in the Bullets And Numbering dialog box, along with the other bullets defined for the current document.

Not a chance—InDesign offers a number of improvements and surprises in the area of typesetting. It’s an evolutionary product—not a revolutionary one, but, on its release, InDesign became http://sl-inworld.com best desktop typesetting program, and raised the bar for its competition.

Hello, When I enter 100, it display 1, When I enter 1000, it display 10, ChefChaudart, Is that bad ? That is one of those things that everyone runs into you change the option and it doesn’t seem to do anything so you leave it changed. If you enter a decimal point everything is normal i.e. 1000. or 1000.50 but if you fail to enter a decimal point your option in Tools, Options, Edit (tab), [x] fixed decimals 2 will be used. Remove the checkmark and you’ll be fine. You can try that on your boss at April Fool’s time as long as their not doing your sal…

•  Step 7. Double-click on the newly inserted [Left Tab] code. The Tab Set dialog appears. Set the Tab type to Decimal, and the Tab position to at least 0.05″. Click Set, then Close. IMPORTANT: Now remove any [Dot Lead] or [Dec/Align] codes by pressing . The main operational codes in the Contents field should now be these codes:

For our example, let’s do headers for affirmative defenses that say “First Affirmative Defense”, “Second Affirmative Defense”, etc. Put your cursor where you want your first heading to go, then go to the Insert tab, click on Quick Parts, then click on Field:

We created a spreadsheet with numbers running in one column in 4-out number groups: 1, 251, 501, 751, etc. and use the multiple records set-up. Our recent challenge was to take that spread sheet and do the 4-out number groupings in threes for reverse collate 3-part NCR on a copier. Takes a bit of time to set up but worth it in the long run.

Continue in this pattern anytime you need to enter inline numbers. Use the reset SEQ field to start a sequence. Follow the reset field with the incrementing SEQ field, as shown in Figure K. You can enter as many incrementing fields as you like. The field is smart enough to continue incrementing until you enter a new reset field.

I need to add 4 “technical contact” fields (which would lookup the Contact entity) to the CONTRACT form. Is this possible? I’ve found it difficult to figure out what to do first. Thanks in advance, Brandon Not possible. You cant have multiple lookups for the same entity. You also cannot create new relationships between two system entitites. This will work in 4.0 Not possible, Pezman. N:M relationships are not possible in 3.0 yet. There is a alternative solution: a new entity to act as an N:M relationship. In your case, Contract/Contact. This entity has two 1:N relations…

•  Step 4. Click on Create Style. The Style Editor opens. In the Style Name field, give the style a name such as “RomanAligned” (The name of the style in the name of the outline must be different; here, we have used similar names as a memory device.) You can give the style a brief description, too. The field labeled “Enter key inserts style” should say , the Type field should be set to Paragraph, and the check boxes “Automatically update style when changed in document” and “Show ‘off codes'” should be checked.

Go to the Insert tab > Text group, then click the Quick Parts icon. Your two new Quick Parts entries are listed in the drop-down — hover over each to see the Description you added displayed as a tooltip.

Try clicking on one of the icons that demonstrates one of the outline styles, then click OK. Type some text, hit , type some more, hit etc. (When you are inside the outline, notice the property bar that appears.)

If you’ve never actually tried to use certain field codes like AutoNum in a header or footer, you’ve probably never found out (the hard way) that not all of field codes work in the header/footer. Certain field codes will throw an error if you try to use them in headers and footers:

If not, the changes you are making may not be sticking because of an Add-In or other problem with saving changes to normal.dotm. As a short-term experiment, when you have normal.dotm open type a phrase on the page like:

A prepress operator and graphic designer for a South Australian commercial printer, with close to 20 years of experience in the trade. He is also a regular contributor to this site and InDesign Magazine, and hosts his own prepress blog “Colecandoo”.

Another master layer is created for the names of the weekdays, which are also common to all pages. The sequential position of the background and the weekdays is different, which is why two master layers are needed. The weekdays layer is sixth from the bottom in the sequence of layers. This master layer must be placed on top of all layers (Figure 9).

At first glance this looks like a perfect project for Data Merge, since all the required data, including the path to the images, would be easy to keep and organize in a spreadsheet, but Data Merge doesn’t do tables, so the best you could hope for is multiple records per page. A catalog plugin might actually be worth the money if this is a regualr project and not a one-off.

“business cards with sequential numbering +sequential numbering in word labels”

Specifies the bounds for the sequence object. The default minimum value for a new sequence object is the minimum value of the data type of the sequence object. This is zero for the tinyint data type and a negative number for all other data types.

If you make a list of things you need to do, starting with number 1 and continuing until all your tasks are accounted for, then you’ve made a sequential list. Something that is sequential often follows a numerical or alphabetical order, but it can also describe things that aren’t numbered but still need to take place in a logical order, such as the sequential steps you follow for running a program on your computer.

I use a template for all my drawings that includes a page number in the lower right hand corner (usually says “Page 1 of 4” for example). I usually edit this number manually, which is fine for documents with a small amount of pages, but if I’m working on a large document (50+ pages) and need to re-order some pages it means editing the page number on every page manually.

Warning  Some people like to use BACKSPACE to remove numbering. This method does remove the number but leaves the cursor indented to whichever level you happened to be in, especially in Outline Numbered paragraphs. The two methods mentioned above will remove the number and restore your cursor to the left margin.

The only thing I can think of is to revert the heading back to normal (Alt, H, E) and then reapply the style.  I have my Heading 1 mapped to Ctrl+Shift+1, Heading 2 and Heading 3 for same pattern.  I figure if I need to use Heading 4, I should rethink my document structure…

A quick way to create a bulleted or numbered list is to type the list, select it, and then click the Bulleted List or Numbered List button in the Control panel. These buttons let you turn the list on or off and switch between bullets and numbers. You can also make bullets and numbering part of a paragraph style and construct lists by assigning styles to paragraphs.

One caveat: you may occasionally notice that when you insert several of these in a row (easy to do when you click on Quick Parts and find where you’ve saved it), the automatic numbering doesn’t seem to work:

* Place the insertion point at the beginning of the Number field, choose Insert Number Placeholder > Level 1 (or just type ^1), and then insert a period. ^1.^#.^m means the first level (1) will be followed by a period, which will be followed by the current level number (2), which will be followed by a period, which will be followed by an em space.

Hi, Let’s keep the problem simple. I have one cell that uses an exchange rate from the internet. That cell changes every minute. What I want to do: In an other cell, I want to keep the highest exchange rate ever. So for example: 6:00 exchange rate = 5.00 — highest exchange rate is 5.00 6:01 exchange rate = 4.98 — highest exchange rate is 5.00 6:02 exchange rate = 5.02 — highest exchange rate is 5.02 6:03 exchange rate = 5.01 — highest exchange rate is 5.02 6:04 exchange rate = 5.03 — highest exchange rate is 5.03 Of course nor for any minute I use a new cell, it just change the n…

Does anyone know whether its possible to make Coreldraw (11) number objects within a file with consecutive numbers. It gets a bit tedious placing text and renumbering it incrementally manually when you’ve got 500 items to label!! I was looking for a shortcut, or perhaps a macro which can take the boredom out of the process. Any ideas?

It is often useful to combine this notation with the technique of treating the elements of a sequence as variables. This yields expressions like ( a n ) n ∈ N {\displaystyle (a_{n})_{n\in \mathbb {N} }} , which denotes a sequence whose nth element is given by the variable a n {\displaystyle a_{n}} . For example:

This article describes how to dynamically rank rows when you perform a SELECT statement by using a flexible method, which may be the only possible solution and which is faster than the procedural solution. Row numbering or ranking is a typical procedural issue. The solutions are typically based on loops and temporary tables; therefore, they are based on SQL Server loops and cursors. This technique is based on an auto join. The chosen relationship is typically “is greater than.” Count how many times each element of a particular set of data fulfills the relationship “is greater than” when the set is compared to itself.

For example, if a cache size of 50 is chosen, SQL Server does not keep 50 individual values cached. It only caches the current value and the number of values left in the cache. This means that the amount of memory required to store the cache is always two instances of the data type of the sequence object.

Everytime the part number generator rule is triggered, it would create a new part number on the next blank row, copy this part number to the Part Number iProperty and assign the file in which the iLogic rule was executed to column B in the xls, save and close.

•  Click in the document location where you want to create a tally of the paragraphs (usually after any paragraph outline codes), then use Tools, Reference, Cross Reference and choose “Paragraph/Outline” as the Reference Type. In the Select Target field, type a target name such as “tally”. Then click Mark Target to insert the [Target] code into the document.

also the way that i print this is first as you can see saving it one by one as .jpeg and selecting 9 of the .jpeg files, right click, then print as wallet size, for it to fit in a 8.5 / 11 paper.. there..

A sequence of real numbers ( a n ) {\displaystyle (a_{n})} converges to a real number L {\displaystyle L} if, for all ε > 0 {\displaystyle \varepsilon >0} , there exists a natural number N {\displaystyle N} such that for all n ≥ N {\displaystyle n\geq N} we have[2]

Typically the second option of saving as a CSV file is the one to choose for use with Data Merge. Click the create button to choose a file name and location, make sure that a header has been assigned and click OK. This creates the CSV file that contains the sequential numbers that can then be used in a Data Merge by opening the Data Merge palette, clicking the flyout and clicking Select Data Source…

Are you tired of WordPerfect turning on automatic paragraph numbering or lettering whenever you type a number or letter (with, optionally, a period or colon) followed by a Tab — e.g., 1 or A. or Q:?

i’ve had to do tons of this lately and found that for the amounts of tickets being done (e.g. 7000 x 10 tickets + cover & mailer) that chuckT’s solution almost 2 years ago is similar to what i use. would be interested to know if others doing similar VDP are using a wholly indesign/excel solution, or if specific VDP software such as XMPie are being used.

It may be convenient to have the sequence start with an index different from 1 or 0. For example, the sequence defined by xn = 1/log(n) would be defined only for n ≥ 2. When talking about such infinite sequences, it is usually sufficient (and does not change much for most considerations) to assume that the members of the sequence are defined at least for all indices large enough, that is, greater than some given N.

Using the instructions in #5, add an incrementing SEQ field. You can highlight any of them, except the reset field. For step 7, enter n}. n is the default switch that inserts the next number in the sequence, making it easy to remember. You don’t have to specify the \n switch, because it’s the default, but you can add it if it helps document your choice.

☼  Using the letter “o” or “O” to start a QuickBullet list will cause QuickBullets to employ a multi-level outline list whereby pressing or entering an indent at the beginning of the second and subsequent paragraphs (before typing text in the paragraph) will indent both the bullet and the text.

Creates a sequence object and specifies its properties. A sequence is a user-defined schema bound object that generates a sequence of numeric values according to the specification with which the sequence was created. The sequence of numeric values is generated in an ascending or descending order at a defined interval and can be configured to restart (cycle) when exhausted. Sequences, unlike identity columns, are not associated with specific tables. Applications refer to a sequence object to retrieve its next value. The relationship between sequences and tables is controlled by the application. User applications can reference a sequence object and coordinate the values across multiple rows and tables.

In bulleted lists, each paragraph begins with a bullet character. In numbered lists, each paragraph begins with an expression that includes a number or letter and a separator such as a period or parenthesis. The numbers in a numbered list are updated automatically when you add or remove paragraphs in the list. You can change the type of bullet or numbering style, the separator, the font attributes and character styles, and the type and amount of indent spacing.

Let’s work with the right hand example using the reset number method. First with field codes displayed (ALT+F9) select the one of the { SEQ A } fields. With the field selected, press ALT+F3. When the “Create AutoText” dialog opens, type “next” and press “OK.”

When the context menu opens, look for the choice Edit Field…. If it doesn’t exist, then your template doesn’t use the SEQ function. If it does exist, click on it. When the next window opens, you should see SEQ in the Advance field properties box. That template definitely uses SEQ.

To create a running list—a list that is interrupted by other paragraphs or that spans multiple stories or documents—create a paragraph style and apply the style to paragraphs that you want to be part of the list. For example, to create a running list of the tables in your document, create a paragraph style called Tables, make a defined list part of the style, and then apply the Tables paragraph style to all paragraphs you want in your http://thedailyrant.net list.

The Nz function will return 0 if there are no records so this expression will return a 1 the first time and then increment the highest number each additional time. The key is where to put this line of code. As I said it needs to be generated immediately prior to saving the record so that another user does not get the same number. So generally I would put this behind a Save button or a button to specifically generate the number. I would then add a second line to commit the records. Either:

You can automatically number items in your document. Most of you already know this. You can also automatically number figures, tables, illustrations, etc. If you decide to reorder those items, Word will automatically update the numbers so that the are in the correct order.

•  Using, creating, modifying, and saving outlines [e.g., how to create fixed-width paragraph numbers (001, 002) and other custom-formatted paragraph numbering and numbering styles, such as adding one or more tabs in front of the number]

lim n → ∞ a n b n = lim n → ∞ a n lim n → ∞ b n {\displaystyle \lim _{n\to \infty }{\frac {a_{n}}{b_{n}}}={\frac {\lim \limits _{n\to \infty }a_{n}}{\lim \limits _{n\to \infty }b_{n}}}} , provided that lim n → ∞ b n ≠ 0 {\displaystyle \lim _{n\to \infty }b_{n}\neq 0}

For an example, a new sequence is created with a starting value of 1 and a cache size of 15. When the first value is needed, values 1 through 15 are made available from memory. The last cached value (15) is written to the system tables on the disk. When all 15 numbers are used, the next request (for number 16) will cause the cache to be allocated again. The new last cached value (30) will be written to the system tables.

(1) Toggling works even if you have QuickBullets turned off (i.e., disabled), which can be a handy way to create a quick outline list in any document. (If QuickBullets are off, they will remain off since this is a separate shortcut operation.)

There are a couple of ways you can set up Word 2007/2010 to use SEQ fields for numbering — you can set them up as AutoCorrect entries or as Quick Parts. Both ways work; the method you choose is up to you. This long article describes how to create the SEQ fields and the numbering style in your Normal.dotm template; how to save the SEQ fields as AutoCorrect entries in Word 2007/2010 (and how to use them); and how to save (and use) them as Quick Parts. The most consuming part of this process is settings up the fields and the style; once they’re set up, using them is super easy.

Hi! I hope you help me with this. I have the almost same problem as #2. I have PassengerTable as table name, then I have the following fields: sequence (to follow what you have in your post), transaction_date, and transaction_ID. Basically I want the to have sequential numbering in the transaction_ID where month and date from transaction_date is shown. i also have a generate (Command27)button as trigger.Tried the code with few modifications, but it sequence doesnt populate, and doesnt show any, except for what i have in control for transaction_ID which is the “Format(transaction_date,”yyyy-mm”) & “-” & Format(sequence,”000″)” and this only shows the year and date, so instead of 2015-08-001 it shows 2015-08-.

Well, these “work arounds” are intended for use on your own officemachines. I doubt you would get a good price printing 2000 unique tickets in a real press. Even with 20-up that would mean 10 plates even for a simple black and white job.

InDesign allows you to add a page number marker to a master page within the document. The master page functions as a template for every page it’s applied to, so the consecutive page numbers appear on every page. InDesign updates the page number automatically as you insert, delete and move pages. To add a page number marker to a master page, create a text box on the master page by going to the Type menu and choosing “Insert Special Character,” “Markers” and then “Current Page Number.”

If necessary, create a text frame where you want a chapter number to appear. If you want a chapter number to appear on several pages, create the text frame on a master page, and apply that master page to the document pages.

IF a document is part of a book and the previous document ended on a right-hand page, AND if your book options are set to allow documents to start on left or right pages, AND if you choose “Automatic Page Numbering,” THEN the document will be allowed to automatically start on the left page. This is great if you need to break a document up in a spot where it’s not necessary for the next document to start on the right.

Thank you for these clear instructions. I have had the same problem as Mommy Vaughan and followed the suggestion. However, on re-opening the Word document, I have the dialogue box Invalid Merge Field. I have to use Task Manager to close down Word. I am using Word 2010. Maybe that is part or all of the problem. Any ideas please? I need to sort this by tomorrow night to print them on Monday!

Sure it does, i just suggested ID since this seems to be a possibly text-heavy document, in which case ID could be best for its other formatting and page layout capabilities. – Lucian May 17 ’17 at 4:24

That’s it! From now on, all you have to do to add SEQ field numbering is either type in your AutoCorrect text (1] and n]) or select the options from your Quick Parts list. If you find your numbering gets out of whack (remember, the numbers don’t update when you insert a new number between two existing numbers, or delete a number), select the sequence and press F9 (Hint: To update all fields for the entire document, press Ctrl+A then F9).

4. Add numbers by inserting the same identifier at another location. Alternatively, copy the first one, select it and press “F9” to update the display. As a third option, you can use the keyboard shortcut “Ctrl-F9” and type “SEQ” and your identifier between the braces that appear. For instance, insert “{SEQ mynum}.” Press “F9” to update the field and enable the number to display.

Hopefully what this InDesign tutorial will show you is that page numbering in InDesign is just as easy to do as it is any other program, and much easier than in most. InDesign allows for quick, easy, and automatic page numbering, and I’ll be showing you how to do that today. It’s a simple trick to learn, takes only a few short seconds, and will be a skill that you will be thankful for every time you need to use it. You can always refer back to http://ringringpromotions.org InDesign tutorial should you forget any of the steps.

Thanks for the replies, but in the time I was waiting, I figured out a reasonably quick way to manually enter the numbers; only took a few minutes. I gotta get this job done quick, so maybe some other time I’ll learn how to do the Print-Merge thing.

•  There’s another small difference. Think of it as the manual version of automatic paragraph numbering: To insert another number in the sequence you have to use the dialog each time. Still, this method has advantages, as described below.

•  Step 2. With the Reference Tools dialog still open (you can drag it to relocate it on screen), select the first word or two of the text in step #3’s sequential numbering then click inside the Select Target field. (The selected words should appear there. Alternatively, you can type a name into the field, if that works better for you.) Click the Mark Target button. A [Target] code is inserted in the document, in the outline’s paragraph just to the left of the word(s) you selected and marked.

One caveat: you may occasionally notice that when you insert several of these in a row (easy to do when you click on Quick Parts and find where you’ve saved it), the automatic numbering doesn’t seem to work:

You cannot enter a blank space by pressing the spacebar—copy and paste a fixed-width space character from the document window instead. Note that plus (+) or comma (,) symbols cannot be used in section prefixes. (See Insert white space characters.)

Go to the Insert tab > Text group, then click the Quick Parts icon. Your two new Quick Parts entries are listed in the drop-down — hover over each to see the Description you added displayed as a tooltip.

You may be tempted to place this number on a master page. That would make sense, but there’s a catch: Autonumbered paragraphs on a master page don’t update until you override them. That is, you have to Command/Ctrl-Shift-click on them to make them “kick in” and update to the correct number.

I’ve described how to do this using Data Merge a number of times, including in post # 6 at I need to number 20,000 tickets in InDesign and have them in order when I cut them where I describe how to do it for stack-cut imposition without a plugin.

If you are using the ROW function, and you want the numbers to be inserted automatically as you add new rows of data, turn that range of data into an Excel table. All rows that are added at the end of the table are numbered in sequence. For more information, see Create or delete an Excel table in a worksheet.

Not a chance—InDesign offers a number of improvements and surprises in the area of typesetting. It’s an evolutionary product—not a revolutionary one, but, on its release, InDesign became the best desktop typesetting program, and raised the bar for its competition.

I would like to number a voucher book, i have place 4 vouchers on a page, the thing is that i want each of these vouchers to start with different number, 100, 200, 300, 400, and then i want to number them 99 times. The problem is that they have to be numbered only 1 per page, so that when i have printed them all i can easily crop them and staple them right up with having to go through it all.

Ah, the document sequencing, the audit thingy. What is the purpose of giving a sequence to the transactions or the documents that you create? Well it has been a practice to assign the number to anything which occurs more than once, by numbering them you can identify the order of its generation. It acts like a chain and if a number goes missing, the link is broken and you can see that there was a deletion or removal of the transaction. Sequence numbering can also be seen in our business processes like organization assign employee number or employee code to their employees in order to identify them. Our vehicles have registration numbers. Even the database have a number primary key for the records it holds. BUT that is just to uniquely identify them. Here the purpose of sequencing is to maintain the Audit Trial of the transaction or as Oracle says in its documentation, to maintain the completeness of the transaction.

Defined lists are often used to track paragraphs for numbering purposes. When you create a paragraph style for numbering, you can assign the style to a defined list, and paragraphs are numbered in that style according to where they appear in the defined list. The first paragraph to appear is given number 1 (“Table 1”), for example, and the next paragraph is given number 2 (“Table 2”), even if it appears several pages later. Because both paragraphs belong to the same defined list, they can be numbered consecutively no matter how far apart they are in the document or book.

I have a table named Artifact Catalog in which there is a field Collection Point ID and a field Artifact ID. On the form I have created the user will input the Collection Point ID, for example: 2-1050. I need to find a way to have this Collection Point ID automatically generate a corresponding Artifact ID, i.e when you click the save button the first record under Artifact ID becomes: 2-1050.1 and the second becomes 2-1050.2 and so on.

¤   There are a variety of Number Types (including bullets and other symbols) you can select from the Insert Paragraph Number dialog. I have screen shots of what I have in my db, where can I send it to you (it is in word format) so that you can take a look at it to see what I am doing wrong. I took a screen shot of what is listed for the button and I took a screen shot of the text box Job No. I don’t know how to bound anything other than put the code behind the button and putting the Job_No in the code as you stated. I understand what you are saying, but I thought if I put the text box name Job No in the code behind the button then it would be bound to my table with the Job No field. Heeeelllllppppp!!!! I am sorry that I can’t seem to grasp this….but appreciate all of your help!

I want to have textbox with 2 columns with footnotes running across the bottom of those columns in one column. ID CS3 footnotes can’t handle this. So I have added fake footnote refs in the doc. using this idea. Now the footnotes themselves I can create in another text frame and use this idea again to create them and then manually place them at the bottom of the page. The only problem however with this is the FN options carrry across the whole doc. right? So even if I create a second doc for the footnotes themselves with different options and then later paste it into the main doc it’ll get messed up right?

I am not sure which version of corel you are using, but typing Print Merge in the help file should bring up some step by step topics.  I am using X3, but I had a crash, and need to reboot my computer to clear some errors.  But one thing that may help, instead of merging a csv file, you could create the data on the fly.  One thing to think through is you will need 12 data fields – for arguments sake call them “cir1”, “cir2″, Cir3” etc through “Cir12”.  These become like the header row in excel.  When asked for a data value, select Auto Increment and start Cir1 at 4000.

A Sequence field tracks differently numbered lists within a document. Combining Sequence fields and AutoText entries give you a fast and easy way to insert Interrogatories, Requests for Production, and Requests for Admission.

After animating a scene from frame -45 to +45, I looked at the sequence of files in their folder and it goes like 0000, 0001, -001, 0002, -002, etc. Is there a way to get these in a sequence starting from -45 –> 0 –> +45?

The AutoText method is a handy, very robust method of creating a sequenced numbered list. The AutoText entries are stored in the document template and available in any new document created from the template.

¤  Changing the numbering scheme (see also the next note): If you first choose a different outline style in Outline/Bullets & Numbering, then that numbering scheme will take effect instead of the default numbering schemes (see next paragraph). This is because the “upstream” [Outline] code helps define the numbering scheme in effect further “downstream”. (The [ParaStyle…][Style] codes can be deleted to remove numbering at any particular paragraph location where it exists, but the new [Outline] code will still be operative.)

GREAT tip with lots of uses! Thank you. This will save me hours of work on some tickets I’m designing. However, I also need to set up table tents that have numbers on them. They’re 2-up, and are folded, so each number needs to appear twice on the same page. In short, I want a page with 1/1 and http://ringringpromotions.org and I’m getting 1/2 and 3/4. Am I missing an obvious fix? Thank you.

To do this, choose Type > Bulleted & Numbered Lists > Define Lists. Click New, and type the name of the list. If you want numbering to restart when in different stories or documents, deselect one of both options, and click OK. When you define the paragraph styles, you’ll reference this list.

For the purposes of this article, we define a sequence to be a function whose domain is a convex subset of the set of integers. This definition covers several different uses of the word “sequence”, including one-sided infinite sequences, bi-infinite sequences, and finite sequences (see below for definitions). However, many authors use a narrower definition by requiring the domain of a sequence to be the set of natural numbers. The narrower definition has the disadvantage that it rules out finite sequences and bi-infinite sequences, both of which are usually called sequences in standard mathematical practice. Many authors also impose a requirement on the codomain of a function before calling it a sequence, by requiring it to be the set R of real numbers,[2] the set C of complex numbers,[3] or a topological space.[4]

As more highways were built, the limitations of sequential numbering became clear[citation needed], and states began to experiment with distance-based (mile-based) exit numbers. The first mile-based system known was implemented on the Garden State Parkway in New Jersey in the late 1950s. Michigan also implemented mile-based junction numbers on Interstate 94 in the 1960s. In this system, the number of miles from the beginning of the highway to the exit is used for the exit number. If two exits would end up with the same number, the numbers are sometimes modified slightly; this is often impossible and exits are given sequential or directional suffixes, just as with sequential numbers.

Thanks for this tip, it is close to what I need in my requirement specification – but my problem is that I need the (requirement-)numbers to be allocated once a requirement is defined, and then stay with that value ‘forever’, and at the same time be sure to have unique (requirement-)numbers.

Note: This trick seems to work only with the Legal (“decimal”), multi-level outlines and not to other multi-level outlines. If you use other, non-Legal multi-level outlines you can set the paragraph number to the expected value (e.g., “2”) and get the desired result.

Occasionally we come across project requirements that include the ability to do sequential numbering in Access on a set of data. We cannot just use the auto-number data type because there is no promise of sequentiality but only uniqueness. In other words, if someone creates a record then later deletes it, there will be a gap in the sequence. So, what are our options? There are actually several ways, each with its pros and cons.

Select None from the Underline drop-down list. There is a big difference in leaving something blank and choosing None. Blank means that it will follow the formatting of the text. None ensures that the number will never be underlined regardless of text formatting.

Rhonda, Thank you for your amazingly quick and thorough reply! You are correct, Word does the Table and Figure numbering splendidly. I was trying to reference those numbers in the text, which I see is a function done quite well in Word using Cross Reference: ‘In Word 2007 and 2010: Display the References tab. In the Captions group, click on the Cross-reference button.’ Thanks again, Joshua.

What I need the new LISP to do is append a space and then a number to the existing tag value in the block, so that the result would look like “ADDRESS: 1”, “ADDRESS: 2”, “ADDRESS 3” or “ELEVATION: 1″, ELEVATION: 2”, etc. depending on whatever the default value for the tag “ID” is.

Distance-based numbers have several advantages. They match the mileposts along the road; it is thus easy to calculate how far one has to go. Additionally, most new exits don’t need letter suffixes, as in a sequential system.[citation needed]

Headers and footers run through the top and bottom of the pages in your document, providing important background information. To create a simple header or footer that includes page numbering, see Add basic page numbering.

I use a template for all my drawings that includes a page number in the lower right hand corner (usually says “Page 1 of 4″ for example). I usually edit this number manually, which is fine for documents with a small amount of pages, but if I’m working on a large document (50+ pages) and need to re-order some pages it means editing the page number on every page manually.

Warning  You can change the tab or remove it individually in each paragraph. BUT, each time you make a customization to your numbering scheme, the .25” tab will reappear in all the paragraphs that are a part of the list. This behavior occurs whether the numbering is tied to styles or not.

In this scenario we are assuming that there will be no more than 999 documents attached to a case. In Scenario 2 we assumed no more than 9999 inquires during a year. So you need to adjust the number of zeros when formatting Sequence for the anticipated number of records. Of course this can always be changed later. You also don’t need to format the sequence with leading zeros as the Format function does. As shown the expression returns something like: DCASD/CI123-025 for the 25th document in case CI123 for client DCASD. Without leading zeros it would be: DCASD/CI123-25. The advantage to the latter is that you don’t have to anticipate the number of records you might have in the sequence, but I’ve found many users prefer a more uniform number with the leading zeros.

I am trying to use mailmerge to print tickets. I tried using a column of sequential numbers on a spreadsheet and inserting that as a field into the mailmerge, but oddly, it used number 8 eight times on the first page, number 16 eight times on the second page, etc. So, I tried using a sequencing field as you describe. It worked great for the first page (numbers 1-8) but when I completed the mailmerge, it sequential numbering in indesign numbers 1-8 on each successive sheet. What do I have to do to make this work in a mailmerge?
