Now repeat for the second and third tickets. But not the fourth, because that’s at the end of the page, so Word will skip to the next number anyway, because the next page always gets the next item in your merge list. Your document should look like this:

1. Start Microsoft Publisher. Click inside the small field with the magnifying glass in the middle of the Available Templates page, then type “tickets” and click the magnifying glass icon. Review the Publisher ticket options, then double-click a template, such as “Raffle Ticket,” to open the design in the Publisher window.

Zoom into the tickets where you have placed the text for the numbering and click on the data merge palette. I think the conclusion of all these Rube Goldberg approaches is that InDesign still isn’t ready for handling what is really a head-smacking-stupid-simple kind of numbering job — the kind of jobs computers were created for in the first place. My DOS word processor XyWrite — from AD 1987! — could do numbering stuff like this in no time and with no trouble. Quite ridiculous, really, when you consider the staggering graphics and typography capabilities inside InDesign — but the poor thing cannot really count.

HELP! When orders are entered into the system, the PICK TICKET REPORT (actual name: SOP BLANK PICKING TICKET ORDER ENTERED) is printed to the warehouse for the staff to pick the stock. The way the warehouse layout is setup, all item numbers are on shelfs/drawers in order of item number. Some times when orders are entered, the item numbers are inputted sporadically (nature of the business). So when the PICKING REPORT/TICKET is printed, the items are in order of input. We would like to have the ticket/report print the items by order of Item Number. Apparently this was done in the past by…
The four templates with automatic serial numbering are quite nice and one of them will most likely be suitable for your needs. You can edit them as well. If you’re going to do that, save the original template separately. Doing so will give you a fresh template, in case you need one.
In the Mail Merge task pane, in the list under Prepare your publication, locate the field name that corresponds to the column heading for the list of tracking numbers in your data source. For example, if you used Tracking Number as the column heading for the list of tracking numbers in your spreadsheet, locate Tracking Number. Drag the tracking number field into the text box that you created for it.
Once you’re finished with the design, go to the “Mailings” ribbon to start the mail merge. You’ll see that the “Update Labels” is grayed out. Change that by clicking on Start Mail Merge > Labels > Cancel.
