Chuck, It does look as though using data merge is the best way, but rather than generating the numbers in Excel here is an improved number generator script to create indesign number and counterfoil numbering data merge files.

Hit the Merge to New Document button on the Mail Merge toolbar. (I don’t advise merging right to the printer. Most of you that are selling raffle tickets don’t want to waste the paper to print them wrong.)
Tip: If your data source contains records that share the same information, and there are ten or fewer unique values in the column, you can filter by specific information. For example, if there are multiple records that list Australia as the country/region, you can filter on Australia.

Drag your cursor on the Font toolbar on the top of the ms word document and formulate necessary alterations. If you are troubling to find ways to include images to make your ticket look appealing and rich, then you need not worry. Just put your cursor on the Insert option in the tool bar and hit on it to add appropriate images befitting the occasion.

Thank you again for your assistance. I took care of the text boxes and everything works quite well. I had some aggravating moments trying to figure out where the \* MERGEFORMAT switch was coming from; I kept deleting it and it kept coming back like a mosquito. I assume it had something to do with the text boxes. Anyway, the document is now a thing of beauty. Thank you.
Choose the template titled “Raffle tickets 6 per page.” Word will provide a preview of the template and then ask if you would like to download the template. By choosing download, Word will replace your existing document with the raffle ticket template for you to edit.
Increase the First Line Indent value if you want the punctuation in long lists to be aligned. For example, if you want “9.” and “10.” to be aligned on the period, change the Alignment to Right and gradually increase the first line indent until the numbers align (make sure Preview is turned on).

An awesome new feature to has been introduced to Microsoft Publisher 2010 is the ability to use Data Sources to create “Catalogue Pages”. This is like a Mail Merge for design documents. Now, I would have to agree that Publisher isn’t the best graphic design program in the market. But it’s certainly adequate for simple ticket designs — for example, for a school social. Let’s say we want each ticket to have a unique number and an inspiration quote. This is all possible through Publisher and a data source, e.g. an Excel Spreadsheet.

Remember that you must update the values in the sheet if you want to continue the numbering series with the next batch of tickets. For instance, if you want your next batch of tickets to start with 112, you’d open the workbook and change the value 100 to 112, and update the remaining values accordingly. Don’t forget to save the workbook after updating the values.

Now for the tricky bit. Mail Merges usually have the one ‘recipient’ per page. So Word won’t pick out the next number in your list until it gets to a new page. By default, it’ll print you four tickets on each page, all with the same number. Then a new page, all with the next number. Etc.

From here there is all kind of ways to get the data on your design depending on what your printing to. For example, if you are printing to a Fiery that supports Freeform then you send you layout file and set it as a background then print the mail merge on top of the Freeform background.
This happens if you change the page size after creating the file—try creating a new document at the finished size, and copy and paste your artwork into the new file. Also, try exporting directly to PDF to cut down on the time.
