So? You are storing 2 sequential numbers then. One a number per last initial, the other an overall number. So you are storing those 2 numbers. Those numbers do not change once generated. There is NO need to redundantly store the concatenated full ID.

Thanks for the quick reply, I think I’m a little confused by the Display aspect of this. Artifact ID is a primary key to the table I am working in and I need it to have a unique identifier that other people can search for. The previously adopted naming convention for this ID is that which I mentioned before, Collection Point ID plus a period and then a sequential number restarting at each new Collection Point ID i.e 2-1050.1, 2-1050.2, 2-1060.1 and so on. So I think I actually need to save this in the Artifact ID field. I realize this might be slightly redundant but I’m not sure how the display would work as far as searching for specific Artifact IDs in the future.

You may wonder whether typing 1, 2, and 3 would be easier than using the ListNum field. Although doing that may be easier initially, the value of using the ListNum field becomes apparent when you cut and paste. When a paragraph contains multiple numbered items that you move or delete, Word automatically updates the ListNum fields. Using ListNum fields assures you of accurate numbering within a paragraph throughout the document.

Providing the same number for groups of documents means that the focus is on the name of the document (which is really what people think of when they go looking for a document), the number merely identifies what part of the system the document relates to and allows documents to be grouped quickly and easily. We generally put these documents into their own container which is similarly numbered and has an appropriate description. My apologies.  I understand now that you’re using the Autofill feature as described in the following KB article.  Despite having worked with Access for quite a number of years, I can’t say that I’ve ever used this feature or seen it used.  Unfortunately, it appears that this feature has indeed been dropped as of Access 2007.  This was reported by a customer previously and it was confirmed that the feature was intentionally dropped, as opposed to some sort of bug preventing it from working correctly.

Now I have another problem. This code worked perfectly up to ten records. When I tried to add the eleventh record, the Sequence field won’t add any more numbers. It’s stuck at 10. This of course causes my RecordNumber field, which displays as

Finally, though it won’t be required, having a ORDER BY clause is probably going to be very essential. Without an explicit sort applied to query, you might find that sequential numbers are sequential… but to the wrong rows! However numbering is still very imperfect in these later versions. Coding the documents can be accomplished by using either an “image” of the document or the “hard” copy. The advantage of imaging your documents is that the extent of the coding for the documents can be determined as the case progresses. With imaging, you can always retrieve the document, since it is linked to a particular database record for instant viewing. For example, after a document has been provided limited objective coding and the document’s importance has increased as the case progresses, then the document can be immediately accessed on your computer screen to do subjective coding.

This is how I see it. A person (passenger) makes a reservation. If the person has never made a reservation before, then they are added to the passenger table, But it really makes no sense to assign a sequential number to the passenger. Otherwise, an entry, just needs to be made in the reservations table. The Reservation needs to include the specific train (number and date so there should be a table for train schedules so all you need is a foreign key), the passenger and date of travel. Here I can understand wanting a sequential number to show passengers booked in a day.

If you use http://sl-inworld.com Form Wizard, controls will be named with the field name the control is bound to. But that name can be changed. This trips up a lot of people because my code samples use a naming convention that is not what is automatically generated. So you just need to make sure you use the correct name for the object. The name is shown in the Name property on the Other tab (Not the Caption property). To determine what field in your table the control is bound to check the ControlSource property.
