Hi. Do you know if there is a way for these endnotes to restart at 1 with each new chapter in a single document? I usually work on 400+ page books with hundreds of end notes. The house style is for them to restart at 1 with each chapter. I am able to set this up in Word before importing to ID but they revert to continous in layout. I don’t want to have to set up multiple ID files.
I want to a sequential number to fill in automatically each time the form is filled out. Hi Scott, I had a question regarding the sequential numbering Apex example…I am looking to automatically restart the sequence every month, which is not a problem using your example (i.e. changing the year to month in the expression). However, I would also like to add in a condition for year, so that the sequence restarts for each month of each year (i.e. my problem is for example that Feb 2011 last sequence number is 5, and then in Feb 2012 this becomes 6, where I would like it to be 1). I make the design with as many up as I need on the master page, linking the frames where the numbers will go. Then I make the list using Excel, copy paste to ID and apply a paragraph style with "start in next frame" option. Click the outbox on the pasted text to get a loaded cursor and delete the frame. Then just shift-click over the first textframe on a live page to have as many "tickets" added as needed automatically.
When typesetting a book, it’s often necessary to insert a forced line break in a chapter title. Let’s say your chapter title runs to two lines, and it isn’t breaking in a great place. What do you do to fix it? You add a forced line break (soft return). But later, when you automatically generate your TOC, the TOC will have forced line breaks where they aren’t needed. In the past, those forced line breaks had to be removed manually every time the TOC was generated.
Footnotes, after all, are always numbered sequentially and update when you add or remove one. The problem is that each time you add a footnote you get an extra space down at the bottom of the column. The solution? Make a paragraph style for your footnotes that specifies a .1 pt tall size with a 0 (zero) leading, then choose that paragraph style in the Document Footnote Options dialog box.
you'd need to use a before save macro. Something like the macro at the end - but it would run on every save, which may not be what you want. I use a macro that gets the invoice # and saves (it does several things). The best way to do this is to use a primary key. In cases where a query is complex and joins several tables, we may need to use the primary key of the table that’s on the bottom of the relationship hierarchy or possible a concatenation of multiple tables’ unique key so that the expression will be unique and thus we can identify which sequential number we have assigned.
Endnote numbering is sequential through the entirety of the linked text frames, treating them as one frame. When you add a new text frame that isn’t linked containing an endnote (such as a break-out or call-out box), InDesign will use an endnote number following the last number in the linked text frames. So if the endnotes in your linked text frames are numbered 1 to 50 and you add a break-out box on page 6, any endnotes in the break-out box will begin with number 51 (and appear totally out of sequence!).
