Unlike identity column values, which are generated when rows are inserted, an application can obtain the next sequence number before inserting the row by calling the NEXT VALUE FOR function. The sequence number is allocated when NEXT VALUE FOR is called even if the number is never inserted into a table. The NEXT VALUE FOR function can be used as the default value for a column in a table definition. Use sp_sequence_get_range to get a range of multiple sequence numbers at once.

(If you prefer using the keyboard, rather than the mouse, then do this instead of dragging down: select cell A2, hit CTRL+C to copy, then select cell A3 and use SHIFT+PageDown to select all the way down to row 500. Then hit CTRL+V to paste.)

To make sure people get their prizes, give them lots of room to print their name, address, and phone number. Some people are leery about giving out their address, but do make sure you get a printed name and phone number.

I use a little program called “Number It” I purchased on E-bay a couple of years ago. It will print the ticket (from bmp file) and number on the Canon 3200 in one pass. BW or Color. Nice little program and well worth the $50-80 price.

When you enter your numbering settings, the program automatically runs through them in the background and if they’re not logical, the program will suggest more logical numbering settings. In addition to checking the numbering settings, the dimensions are checked when you type them, the text will temporarily turn red you are inside the margins or off the edge of the paper.

Let’s take an example of cashier who receives vouchers from different departments which bear different serial numbers. Thus it is not possible for him to arrange such documents in a series. This can pose serious problems if one of the vouchers get missing. In order to make sure that all the vouchers are present cashier will give his own numbering to each document he receives following a particular sequence. And later he will use his own numbering system to track different documents. Suppose the following scenario he faced:

Creating a sequential list of numbers, in Word, sounds like an intimidating task. Sure, you can create a numbered list quickly enough, but that feature works with additional text – you’re numbering something. If you want a list of just numbers, you have to work a bit harder. Word’s SEQ field might come to mind, but that solution is better suited to template-type numbering. In order words, this field works great if you’re numbering documents, labels, and so on. It doesn’t work so well if you just want to create a list of sequential numbers. You can use it that way, but it’ll be more work than it’s worth.

Sequence fields are the first method that Word developed for automatic numbering and, in the words of John McGhie, the most robust. They are virtually unbreakable. Here is a link to the Microsoft Office reference page for them in Word 2010. As far as I know, the syntax and the switches have remained unchanged since before Windows.

You will now see a “Catalog Merge Area”. You’ll be able to enter anything in here — plus the data fields we created in the Excel document previously. This area is duplicated automatically 8 times per page (because my example is 2×4)!

Serial numbered custom tickets are our specialty and are great for keeping better track of your ticket inventory and tracking admissions. Simply keep a log or spreadsheet of the serial numbers used and what is left on hand.

Yes, the controlsource of Sequence is Sequence. I’m not getting any errors, just isn’t populating Sequence at all. I also tried making the controlsource the Sequence field in tblLogRecords, but that didn’t work either and gave me “#Name?” in the form.

Some drawbacks to this feature are that you lose a little control when you are typing. Word formats for you and some users do not like this. Also, on certain items, you will get a number when you do not expect or need one. For example, you have an attorney whose name begins with an initial (A. George Smith). When you type the name and press ENTER, the first initial “A.” converts to an automatic number.

When a reservation is confirmed, the airline keeps a record of the booking in its computer reservations system. Customers can print out or may be provided with a copy of a e-ticket itinerary receipt which contains the record locator or reservation number and the e-ticket number. It is possible to print multiple copies of an e-ticket itinerary receipt.

Pay attention to the reference made to $B$2 (absolute reference) and B11 (relative reference).  That’s why you will see the range changes to $B$2:B11 and $B$2:B5 when you are looking into the formula in A11 and A5 respectively.  Literally it means a range “from the the row assigned a to the active row”.

Every ticket you create manually or from a received email will be assigned a unique number generated from a sequence that you have defined it yourself. This is very useful when you have thousands of issues since you can easily search, track and reference by the unique number.Assign a sequence per every helpdesk team or use a default sequence for all helpdesk tickets. The choice is in your hands.

I replied to you on the Answers forum. Let’s continue there, but I need to know what you have done and what about is not working. Please reply there with details. But the blog instructions are pretty specific, if you follow them with the only changes substituting your actual field and control names, then it should work.

If the numbers appear to be cut off, adjust the formatting and layout of your publication. For example, you may need to increase the size of the text box that contains the data field for your tracking number, or you might need to decrease the font size of the data field.

The tickets were printed exactly as ordered and arrived on the day they were scheduled to. We are very happy again with the high quality nature of the printing and the material the tickets are printed on, even with choosing the least expensive options. We’ll be back next time we need tickets!

Hi Scott you helped me with the sequential numbering however, I am having a problem where I changed from before insert to putting the code behind a button Save Record and Get New Number under the OnClick

1. Create a text frame on the Master page, while dragging, split the frame horizontally and vertically using arrows on the keyboard (Gridify your frame), this way all frames are threaded, you may do the same on both pages of the Masters (Spread) but make sure you link last frame of left Master page and first text frame of right Master page.

One solution is to format the heading with the style and follow it with a hidden paragraph mark. You should format the text in the next paragraph with a style that is not included in the Table of Contents. A hidden paragraph mark keeps the text together on one line when it is printed, even though it is actually two separate paragraphs. The Table of Contents command picks up only those paragraphs with heading styles and places them into the Table of Contents.
I am printing many pages of tickets. Each page has 5 tickets and I would like to sequentially put a number on each ticket. I have tried to use the auto page numbering feature but that is putting the same number on each of the 5 tickets and then increments for the next page — not what I need. Also, can the numbering not suppress the leading zeroes? Thanks….
I am trying to implement scenario 3 and can not get it to work. I created a button and put the code in the “on click” event procedure. I modified the code to work with my fields and tables. I also added the me.dirty = False and Me.Requery in an attempt to get things to work.

Have tried a few and have found that this one is the best by far – have used it for raflle tickets (both colour & b/w) and invoice books – just import PDF and position where you want numbers to go and that’s it
