Patient number format is >L-999/99999 where L is the first letter of the last name, next 3 digits is the count of number of patients with the same first letter of last name and the last 5 digits is the total count of all patients at the time the patient was entered in the system.

We use the auto page numbering trick here, the trick is to do it as spreads. You just make your pages the same size as the ticket with crops and bleeds. Then set up the shell on the master page and place your auto page number where you want your numbers. Each pages is the next number. You can also have two sets of numbers for perforated ticket. You then can use the page start options to add to the numbers and keep the same number of total numbers. For example you would do a new page start after number 99. 0001 to 0099 so it doesn’t add two “0’s” to the front of 100 and you get 00100 when you want 0100. Works great for small quantities, we have done up to 1000+ tickets and once you do it once or twice it is a snap to set up. To avoid having to do 1000 pages just send the tickets in groups. Usually between 25 to 100 at a time works good depending on artwork file size. Just save each time before sending to printer and name the file with what the tickets are. Like “MyTickets-0001-0100.Indd”. Makes it easier to go back if you have a problem. You can even do two rolls of tickets if your using 12 x 18 sheets by flipping the sheet and doing one row along the top and one along the bottom on reverse side. That is if your ticket is single Sided. Two sided tickets are a bit trickier. 🙂

Of course, there are third-party solutions that are available for creating sequentially numbered labels. One that comes highly recommended by several WordTips subscribers is Bates Labels from Payne Consulting (http://www.payneconsulting.com). This free Word template allows you to easily create as many labels as you need for a specific purpose.

I have several xml files (SMS backup files) I am editing where I want to insert sequential numbering. The number in the id field shown in bold italics below has been replaced with a unique string to allow for a find and replace to be done sequentially giving, e.g. xml a) containing 1 to 25, xml b) containing id’s 26 to 50, xml c) containing id’s 51 to 75 and so on.

I took a screen shot of what is listed for the button and I took a screen shot of the text box Job No. I don’t know how to bound anything other than put the code behind the button and putting the Job_No in the code as you stated. I understand what you are saying, but I thought if I put the text box name Job No in the code behind the button then it would be bound to my table with the Job No field. Heeeelllllppppp!!!! When the context menu opens, look for the choice Edit Field…. If it doesn’t exist, then your template doesn’t use the SEQ function. If it does exist, click on it. When the next window opens, you should see SEQ in the Advance field properties box. That template definitely uses SEQ.

The code block should not need to be modified (unless you want to implement sorting that can be ascending or descending as mentioned below).  The first three parameters of the expression are required.  Most of the time only the first two parameters of the expression are all that must be modified.

Tip  You can always reset your numbering formats back to Word’s defaults by clicking on the Reset button in the Bullets and Numbering dialog box. You will have to reset each numbering scheme individually.

Any time you want to produce another batch, open the document, press Ctr-A, then F9 and input the starting Ticket #. Simple. Alternatively, if you have Word configured to update fields at print time, just print the document. When you do so, you’ll be prompted for the starting # and Word will take care of the rest.

Ok I guess it is better for me to explain what I am doing. I am in the process of creating an Access Database that an individual has been using an Excel spreadsheet forever and a day. Well the individual has on occasion doubled up numbers, forgot numbers, etc. So on what I have learned from different Access courses and Google searches I am trying to apply my knowledge.

With all of the many available templates, how do you select the right ticket design? It’s a good idea to choose a design featuring a background image that in some way fits with your fundraising purpose. This ties your efforts together in a cohesive way, making your tickets more attractive to buyers. A good design gives potential buyers an idea into the type of cause they’re supporting right off the bat. If you’re raising money for a sports organization, choose a template featuring sporty images. LIkewise, a template with musical notes on it fits in well for a band-related fundraiser. However, if you need a basic template that works for any function, we have simple designs that fit any general need. It’s best to use something other than general copy paper when printing raffle tickets. Heavier weight paper, or even card stock, could be a better choice. Not only does it look more professional, but the tickets will tear off more easily along the perforation. Choose paper colors on the lighter end of the spectrum so that the template design shows up clearly when printed. Office supply stores and craft stores carry papers in various weights, and these are both good places to buy card stock. Some stores sell raffle ticket paper that’s already perforated, so using this type eliminates one of your most time-consuming tasks.

Sequence fields are the first method that Word developed for automatic numbering and, in the words of John McGhie, the most robust. They are virtually unbreakable. Here is a link to the Microsoft Office reference page for them in Word 2010. As far as I know, the syntax and the switches have remained unchanged since before Windows.

What is the Controlsource of the Job_No control? I suspect its not bound so the table is not getting updated. It should be bound to the Job_No field. The code you are using should increment the highest value of Job_No in Quote Sheet by 1. But if Job_No is not being populated with the incremented number it will laways be zero.

It would be great if we had some sort of magic auto-incrementing function that would give us unique numbers sequentially.  This would allow us to start with an easy number like 0000 and then increase it to 0001, 0002…. easy to remember! Unfortunately, this is not that easy when working disconnected because there is no way for an offline device to know what is the next sequential number available.  Even if we were able to create sequential numbers within a device, we cannot guarantee that other devices will not create the same sequential numbers.

Now I have another problem. This code worked perfectly up to ten records. When I tried to add the eleventh record, the Sequence field won’t add any more numbers. It’s stuck at 10. This of course causes my RecordNumber field, which displays as

Occasionally we come across project requirements that include the ability to do sequential numbering in Access on a set of data. If you want numbered headings to be underlined, but do not want a line under the number, it can be difficult if you don’t know how it works. À la réception d’un don, l’organisme de bienfaisance entre les données nécessaires concernant le donateur, établit une numérotation séquentielle et imprime le formulaire en deux parties en un seul passage laser, c’est-à-dire en une seule impression. Dans ce cas, l’organisme de bienfaisance doit conserver le document papier à titre de double du reçu aux fins de la Loi.

Remember that you must update the values in the sheet if you want to continue the numbering series with the next batch of tickets. For instance, if you want your next batch of tickets to start with 112, you’d open the workbook and change the value 100 to 112, and update the remaining values accordingly. Don’t forget to save the workbook after updating the values.

Have tried a few and have found that this one is the best by far – have used it for raflle tickets (both colour & b/w) and invoice books – just import PDF and position where you want numbers to go and that’s it

Tip  Microsoft strongly recommends that you link your numbering to styles. The importance of this will be very apparent during the Outline Numbered section. Also, there is more information on the importance of styles when working with numbering in the Styles chapter.

Hi – are you creating your own tickets using the instructions on this page? If so, you can of course change the font and everything else in your Word document. If you are using the Raffle Ticket Creator app (app.raffleticketcreator.com) then you can’t change the font size … you’ll just need to tinker with the exact words that you are including in order to get them to fit on the page. Every ticket you create manually or from a received email will be assigned a unique number generated from a sequence that you have defined it yourself. This is very useful when you have thousands of issues since you can easily search, track and reference by the unique number.Assign a sequence per every helpdesk team or use a default sequence for all helpdesk tickets. The choice is in your hands.

However, there is a property we can use to get ourselves out of this problem and that is the AbsolutePosition property of the recordset. We can create a textbox, bind it to expression “=RowNumber()” and then create a function on the module behind the form that references the recordset:

Save it. Create a new document. Is your phrase in the new document? If it is, reopen normal.dotm and remove it! If it is not, you have something blocking your saving of normal.dotm or you are opening the wrong normal.dotm.

The auto-indenting feature of bullets and lists has always frustrated me. EVERY time you apply a numbered or bulleted list, you’ve got to set the indents. I want my lists to be indented at the very left of the page, flush with the rest of the paragraphs. But no, Microsoft insists that you want them indented by 0.63cm and hanging at 1.27cm (WHY 0.63? Why not 0.7? Or 1.0cm? But that’s a question for a different session.) (I know, it’s because MS is American and still uses inches etc…)

If the list you want is as simple as “1”, “2”, “3”, you’ll appreciate how easy it is to apply this type of numbering in legal documents. Simple numbered lists are different in Word 2000 than they were in Word 97. In Word 2000, the default for even the most basic list is multi-level. For example, if you number an item and press Enter and then press the TAB key, Word automatically formats this number as the second level in an outline numbered list format. Single and multi-level numbering are explained later in this chapter.

The Field Calculator uses the ObjectID order exclusively and in previous threads no one has proposed an effective or efficient way to override that order with the Field Calculator.  However, in my next post I have come up with a way to do that.  However, the code everyone else has provided for the autoIncrement calculation cannot give any other order than the order you are seeing.

First, you have to use YOUR field and control names. The ones I use are samples. The error you are getting you do not have a control named txtProject. So you have to substitute the correct name of the control. bound to the ProjectID field. By the way it is not a good idea to the octothorpe(#) as part of a field name. A controlname may be different from a fieldname. The name property of a control is on the Other tab in the Properties dialog.

FONT TIP: Do not use any fonts that start with a period. For example, instead of using ”.Helvetica” use ”Helvetica” instead. Fonts that start with a period in the font menu are not compatible with Number Press.

I’m using Arc 10 & attempted the Python & VB Script codes.  Both produced a window stating: “There was a failure during processing, check the Geo processing Results window for details”, which states: “ERROR 000732 Input Table: Dataset Boundaries does not exist or is not supported”. 

For example, if I have a custom column named Sequence No. and I create a new item number 3, then all items from number 3 onwards should be automatically +1. The user should be able to capture the sequence number and have this value recalculated for other list items.

Publisher doesn’t allow for automated sequencing, with the exception of the numbers that come on the tickets in the template. Each ticket must be hand-typed unless you choose to follow the template sequencing.

These numbers are updated when you sort them with your data. The sequence may be interrupted if you add, move, or delete rows. You can manually update the numbering by selecting two numbers that are in the right sequence, and then dragging the fill handle to the end of the numbered range.

5. Drag the number, which Publisher defaults to “1,” into place on the ticket. To change the sequence, such as to start with “100” instead of “1,” click the “Page Number” button again and choose “Format Page Numbers.” Click the “Start this section with” radio button and type the new number into the field. Click the “OK” button to have Publisher update the ticket number.

I’m also concerned about your table design. You mentioned entering a First name. But I don’t really see that people names belong in a transaction record. Can you explain more about what you are tracking in your app and what these transactions are.

A cash raffle is when the prize is a fraction of the total of the earnings. They are sometimes referred to as “50/50” draws, although the prize may not necessarily be equal to 50 percent of the earnings.[5] It is illegal in some places.[citation needed]

Creating a sequential list of numbers, in Word, sounds like an intimidating task. Sure, you can create a numbered list quickly enough, but that feature works with additional text – you’re numbering something. If you want a list of just numbers, you have to work a bit harder. Word’s SEQ field might come to mind, but that solution is better suited to template-type numbering. In order words, this field works great if you’re numbering documents, labels, and so on. It doesn’t work so well if you just want to create a list of sequential numbers. You can use it that way, but it’ll be more work than it’s worth.

To get started with a blank template, simply determine the number of rows and columns you want page page. It works rather like the “table” creator on Word. For this example, I chose a 2×4 (two columns, four rows) layout.

A raffle often involves several different possible prizes that can be won, and a ticket will be drawn from the group at random for each of the prizes. In this manner, people are not buying tickets to win a specific prize, but for the possibility of winning any of the prizes, as the prizes do not have specific numbers attached. A ticket is drawn for the initial prize; that ticket is then left out of the container. A second ticket is then drawn for the next prize, and that ticket also is discarded, and so on. This continues until all prizes have been won.

Scott, trying my best to have sequential numbering almost identical to your scenario 1 (bound control on input form which increments last number by 1). Where do I enter this code? I have a form which opens and is ready for entry of new Project Designs. I want to show in the control box the next Project ID (a number) so do I place the code, Me.txtProject ID = Nz(DMax(“[Project ID]”,”DESIGN PROJECTS”),0)+1, under On Load, After Update, or where? And also, the Me.Dirty = False or DoCmd.RunCommand

The code block should not need to be modified (unless you want to implement sorting that can be ascending or descending as mentioned below).  The first three parameters of the expression are required.  Most of the time only the first two parameters of the expression are all that must be modified.

Thanks, Scott. I made the changes you suggested, but it’s still not working. Nothing is being populated in the Sequence control on the form. If I manually enter a # in the Sequence field, the RecordNumber displays correctly. Here is my code for the SaveRecordButton and the controlsource expression for the RecordNumber.

Uniqueness is not automatically enforced for sequence values. The ability to reuse sequence values is by design. If sequence values in a table are required to be unique, create a unique index on the column. If sequence values in a table are required to be unique throughout a group of tables, create triggers to duplicates caused by update statements or sequence number cycling.

An application requires multiple numbers to be assigned at the same time. For example, an application needs to reserve five sequential numbers. Requesting identity values could result in gaps in the series if other processes were simultaneously issued numbers. Calling sp_sequence_get_range can retrieve several numbers in the sequence at once.

An awesome new feature to has been introduced to Microsoft Publisher 2010 is the ability to use Data Sources to create “Catalogue Pages”. This is like a Mail Merge for design documents. Now, I would have to agree that Publisher isn’t the best graphic design program in the market. But it’s certainly adequate for simple ticket designs — for example, for a school social. Let’s say we want each ticket to have a unique number and an inspiration quote. This is all possible through Publisher and a data source, e.g. an Excel Spreadsheet.

Once you’re finished with the design, go to the “Mailings” ribbon to start the mail merge. You’ll see that the “Update Labels” is grayed out. Change that by clicking on Start Mail Merge > Labels > Cancel.

Final note. Remember to make sure you use the actual object names. The textbo bound to the PONum filed would not be named txtPONum by default. And don’t forget to add the Me.Dirty=False to commit the records immediately after generating the number.

The above will generate a number similar to this: 17-09-26 13:22:23 where the first two characters are the year, the next two the month, then the day, hour, minute and second.  If you look carefully at the expression within the format-date() function I have added some dashes and spaces a separators, but you can get rid of them if you like.

Another critical limitation is that at the time e-tickets were initially designed, most airlines still practiced product bundling. By the time the industry began 100% e-ticket implementation, more and more airlines began to unbundle previously included services (like checked baggage) and add them back in as optional fees (ancillary revenue). However, the e-ticket standard did not anticipate and did not include a standardized mechanism for such optional fees.

Instead of working harder than you need to, insert a one-column table with as many rows as necessary to accommodate your list. Then, using Word’s numbering feature, number that column. Finally, convert the table to text. The resulting list is a fixed numbered list, so you’ll have to live with its limitations; when you can do so, this method definitely beats most alternative solutions.

Today we are going to talk about another Express Tool because you know how I love my Express Tools. This particular Express Tool really comes in handy in case you have text on your screen — single line text or mtext — that you want to number sequentially.

One of the easiest ways to begin applying numbers is by starting to type a numbered list. Word recognizes that you are creating a list and responds accordingly by converting text that you type into numbered items. The number scheme, delimiter characters that mark the beginning or end of a unit of data and formatting are all based on what you have typed.

If you have already developed a set of specific code numbers that you want to use to track and categorize customer responses, you can type these numbers into a column of the data source that you plan to use for the mail merge.

To enter your text, click the text box in the template. To add a new text box, click the Add Text Box button from the menu on the left. Move your text boxes by clicking on the edge of the box and dragging it to just the right spot.

The best way to do this is to use a primary key. In cases where a query is complex and joins several tables, we may need to use the primary key of the table that’s on the bottom of the relationship hierarchy or possible a concatenation of multiple tables’ unique key so that the expression will be unique and thus we can identify which sequential number we have assigned.

So using a field with Global ID, or even a manually created ID that is really long (full user name plus date plus time) is not ideal. With the old paper submittals we received, we had an auto incrementing number preceded by a letter indicating Animal, Plant, Vertebrate or Invertebrate (e.g. A1234). I understand this is not possible in Survey123 because there are multiple users submitting records and you could very easily have overlap in the numbers BUT what if the user name preceded the auto incrementing numbers e.g. taraboswell0001?

Thank you for your reply.  It reassured me that I was on the right path. From having read other Help texts, I guessed that I would have to use good ole mail-merge and set up a numbers list in Excel. Luckily my knowledge of Excel was good enough to know about the drag&drop for sequential immediate numbering. When it came to the crunch, it was this particular type of mail merge which gave me a bit of initial difficulty. Despite my having used it happily and often in Word, for labels in Publisher, it was – not surprisingly – different in certain respects; principally the crucial point of the Print stage, which necessitated finding the option Publications & Paper Settings, and selecting 2 specific parameters, namely (1) Multiple pages per sheet,  (2) Single-sided printing (my default double printing had appeared). Once I’d sussed this, it was plain sailing.  Thanks again.

You may wonder whether typing 1, 2, and 3 would be easier than using the ListNum field. Although doing that may be easier initially, the value of using the ListNum field becomes apparent when you cut and paste. When a paragraph contains multiple numbered items that you move or delete, Word automatically updates the ListNum fields. Using ListNum fields assures you of accurate numbering within a paragraph throughout the document.

We’ll start with the simplest, scenario 1. Acme will use a straight sequential number for its Purchase Order numbers. Add a (Long?) Integer field to the table named PONum. Add a control to your Purchase Order form bound to that field. Then use the following expression to populate that control:

To enter specific sequential number codes, such as purchase order numbers, you can use the ROW function together with the TEXT function. For example, to start a numbered list by using 000-001, you enter the formula =TEXT(ROW(A1),”000-000″) in the first cell of the range that you want to number, and then drag the fill handle to the end of the range.

I’m not sure what you’re doing – the ‘/’ should be ‘\’ and the very first ticket # should not have the ‘\c’. See the attached. It has the FILLIN in the first SEQ field as described in my previous post. Simply press Ctrl-A, then F9, input a starting # and all the tickets will update.

Number Position This affects how numbers line up in a document, whether they are right, left, or center aligned. For example, you may want decimals to align for lists with double-digit numbering and thus would choose Right alignment. Settings in this area do not affect the text however.

To save your design, click the Save button. In the pop-up window, create a file name and save to either your free MyAvery online account or to your computer. To go back and open your saved projects, just go to avery.com/print.

However at the same time I am trying to autonumber the LH field so that at the end of the calendar year it will automatically roll to the new year with a new sequential number. I hope this all makes more sense now.

Creating numbered tickets in Word can seem difficult or even impossible if you are not familiar with all the capabilities of the Word program. If you have tried going to the Word template section and have been unsuccessful or frustrated with all the options and questions, there is an easier way. The simplest resolution for creating numbered tickets is to find existing templates that can be edited and adjusted to fit your needs.

Many sport, concert venues, and cinemas use electronic ticketing for their events. Electronic tickets, or “eTickets” as they are sometimes referred, are often delivered as PDFs or another downloadable format that can be received via email or through a mobile app. Electronic tickets allow spectators to download their tickets, as opposed to waiting for physical tickets to arrive in the mail. A printed copy of these tickets or a digital copy on a mobile phone should be presented on coming to the venue. These tickets now normally also have a barcode, which may be scanned on entry into the venue to streamline crowd processing. Electronic tickets have become increasingly prevalent in the entertainment industry over the last decade.

• The numbers have to be random on the raffle tickets for this to work. In order to be sure you have no duplicate (winning) numbers you have to literally write down each number for each raffle ticket (that’s 1000 numbers – a lot of work).

Create a text frame on the Master page, while dragging, split the frame horizontally and vertically using arrows on the keyboard (Gridify your frame), this way all frames are threaded, you may do the same on both pages of the Masters (Spread) but make sure you link last frame of left Master page and first text frame of right Master page.

The second argument is a string containing a field list that will control the sequential number sorting.  The fields in the list should only be separated by commas between the names.  The last field in the field list should always be the OID@ field to provide the dictionary key and to ensure that each record is uniquely numbered. Using the OID@ field as the dictionary key provides fast access to the native order of the records processed by the Field Calculator.

Thanks for the quick reply, I think I’m a little confused by the Display aspect of this. Artifact ID is a primary key to the table I am working in and I need it to have a unique identifier that other people can search for. The previously adopted naming convention for this ID is that which I mentioned before, Collection Point ID plus a period and then a sequential number restarting at each new Collection Point ID i.e 2-1050.1, 2-1050.2, 2-1060.1 and so on. So I think I actually need to save this in the Artifact ID field. I realize this might be slightly redundant but I’m not sure how the display would work as far as searching for specific Artifact IDs in the future.

Patient number format is >L-999/99999 where L is the first letter of the last name, next 3 digits is the count of number of patients with the same first letter of last name and the last 5 digits is the total count of all patients at the time the patient was entered in the system.

Ok I guess it is better for me to explain what I am doing. I am in the process of creating an Access Database that an individual has been using an Excel spreadsheet forever and a day. Well the individual has on occasion doubled up numbers, forgot numbers, etc. So on what I have learned from different Access courses and Google searches I am trying to apply my knowledge.

Warning  Do not delete the number that appears in the Number Format box. If you do so accidentally, select a number style from the Number Style drop-down list to put it back. If the Overtype feature is active, this will cause the number to be easily deleted.

Here is a version that can sort the fields in either ascending or descending order.  You just need to add a space and D or d (” D” or ” d”) after a field name to have a field sort in descending order.  Ascending order sorting is assumed otherwise, but you are welcome to put a space and A or a (” A” or ” a”) after a field name for consistency.  In this version you can include unneeded whitespace characters in the field list between fields or order specifiers and they will be removed to fit the required format.

You’ve got some tips to help make your raffle more successful. You’ve got several free Word ticket templates to choose from. You know how to sequentially number tickets in two different ways. Now you’re done. Click OK and you should see the number appear in the text frame. To make more numbers, just duplicate this frame. Every time you make a new frame, InDesign increments the number automatically. Note that in the following image, the frames are not threaded together:

The user will then see a list of the combinations of to choose from, but the combo will return the autonumber RecordID to use to select the record. In fact, you can use the combobox wizard to create a search combo.

To ensure each number fills its own text frame, select the whole story (Command/Ctrl-A), open the Keep Options (Command/Ctrl-Option/Alt-K) and choose In Next Frame from the Start Paragraph pop-up menu.

No, Since you will be starting with a 3 digit number initially, then you don’t need to use the Format function to pad with leading zeros. And since you won’t be using the Format function, then there will be no problem when the number goes to 4 digits.

That’s right. There’s a great ticket template that comes with Microsoft Word 2010 and newer. When you create a new document in word, just type “raffle tickets” in the search box. Then you’ll see a thumbnail image of the template.

Example E consumed the first 79 of the Samples.IDLabel sequence numbers. (Your version of AdventureWorks2012 may return a different number of results.) Execute the following to consume the next 79 sequence numbers (80 though 158).

So I spent some time trying to figure it out, playing with Normal.dotm and the various styles (List paragraph, List Number, List Bullet etc etc). And finally, when I’ve got Normal.dotm open (i.e. I’m editing that template file), I get my result: I apply a standard numbered list, and it comes up flush left (i.e. not indented) and hanging at 1.0cm (cos I don’t use inches…) and with a tab stop applied at 1.0cm as well – funky stuff!

Thanks very much for your prompt reply, which reassured me that I was on the right path. From having read various Help topics, I suspected that I’d have to use an Excel data source for the numbers. Fortunately, my knowledge of Excel was good enough to know about the drag and drop facility to create automatic sequential numbering, so the data source creation was easy. In the end, it was the mail merge (no surprises?) which proved a tad tricky, but I got there in the end. I’ve used MM many times and quite happily in Word documents, but for Publisher label format, it was of course a bit different. The important bit that I had to discover for myself was the significance of, after getting to the Print stage, going into Print options, to Publication & Paper Settings, and selecting Multiple Pages per Sheet (& in my case, also “Single-sided” cos my default of duplex printing had come up). Oui c’est possible de le faire avec les champs SEQ de numérotation auto et oui c’est possible de le faire sur des pages différentes comme tu le demandes mais c’est plus compliqué car pour Word, un champ SEQ prend la valeur +1 du précédent dans l’ordre des champs (donc d’abord par ligne puis par page) et là tu demandes à l’avoir dans un autre ordre. La solution la plus simple est alors de faire comme j’ai fait pour la partie de la 1ère carte qui est associée au 1er talon avec différentes champs SEQ (pour avoir finalement différentes numérotations à suivre au sens de Word mais qui sont liées, ce qui fait que tu garderais aussi la fonctionnalité d’une seule mise à jour pour le 1er talon qui déclencherait la mise à jour de tous tes numéros. Regarde le champ REF inclus dans le champ SEQ de la 1ere carte pour bien comprendre, après tu peux utiliser le même principe.
