The ObjectID numbers are the actual numbers of the record creation and storage order in a table.  Deleted records may leave gaps in the numbers, but the relative storage order of one record relative to another is always indicated by the ObjectID.  All programmatic processing of tables and feature class attribute data use this order by default.  This behavior has been discussed repeatedly on the forum and this limitation is why this thread has had so many posts already.

I’m using Arc 10 & attempted the Python & VB Script codes.  Both produced a window stating: “There was a failure during processing, check the Geo processing Results window for details”, which states: “ERROR 000732 Input Table: Dataset Boundaries does not exist or is not supported”. 

My only critique of the script it that it does not appear that the script preserves the original feature ObjectIDs of the original data for purposes of doing a join back to your original feature class/table (assuming you need to preserve that table).  If you can modify the original table’s schema you could first create and calculate a field that stores the original ObjectIDs in a Long Interger field.  The tool output will contain that field, which would allow you to do a join back to the original for labeling, symbolizing or transfering the new sequential IDs back into a field located in your original feature class.

Got it to work! I modified my spreadsheet and added a header row with the words “Ticket Number” in field A1. Then I left the checkbox checked when I imported the spreadsheet to Word. That seemed to make it happy. THANK YOU!! This was so helpful!!

Basically, the only difference is that we now maintain a VBA.Collection, and this time we do make use of the UniqueKeyVariant parameter, using it as a key to locate the previously assigned number. If we don’t find it, we add to the VBA.Collection. The SQL to use those 2 functions remains identical. The downside is that if the query generates millions worth of rows, the memory may run out due to a large VBA.Collection. However, if a form is bound to that large dataset, it will likely have several other problems anyway so VBA.Collection should not be a problem for forms that loads a few hundred rows. The other downside is that VBA.Collection will persist indefinitely even long after the query has “finished.” Back to form example, you might need to remember to call the ResetRowNumber() function on a form’s close to ensure that you dispose of the VBA.Collection and free up the memory.

OK, First, you need to reread the blog. You should NOT be storing the Transaction_ID. It is a calculated value. Second, your naming is what confused me. Your Passenger table should have an autonumber PassengerID. That PassengerID should be the Foreign Key in your Reservations table. Your servation table should also have an autonumber for ReservationID. I really don’t see why you need sequential numbering in the passenger table. I can understand it in the Reservations table, but not in the passenger table. Also, I don’t see any reason for a transaction date in the passenger table. What is the Controlsource of the Job_No control? I suspect its not bound so the table is not getting updated. It should be bound to the Job_No field. The code you are using should increment the highest value of Job_No in Quote Sheet by 1. But if Job_No is not being populated with the incremented number it will laways be zero.

Oui c’est possible de le faire avec les champs SEQ de numérotation auto et oui c’est possible de le faire sur des pages différentes comme tu le demandes mais c’est plus compliqué car pour Word, un champ SEQ prend la valeur +1 du précédent dans l’ordre des champs (donc d’abord par ligne puis par page) et là tu demandes à l’avoir dans un autre ordre. La solution la plus simple est alors de faire comme j’ai fait pour la partie de la 1ère carte qui est associée au 1er talon avec différentes champs SEQ (pour avoir finalement différentes numérotations à suivre au sens de Word mais qui sont liées, ce qui fait que tu garderais aussi la fonctionnalité d’une seule mise à jour pour le 1er talon déclencherait la mise à jour de tous tes numéros. Regarde le champ REF inclus dans le champ SEQ de la 1ere carte pour bien comprendre, après tu peux utiliser le même principe.

Je te rappelle le principe (enfin celui que j’ai choisi et qui fonctionne depuis 7 ans pour les associations de mon village). Il s’agit d’un document Word dans lequel il y a des champs SEQ (=numérotation auto) + des champs REF (dont le 1er est inclus) dans un champ SEQ). Trop fun Word.

Start your sequencing at any point you like, to pick up where you left off on your last print order.

A cursor in a script can override this order by using the ORDERBY keyword in an SQL expression to change the order of the records as they are read, or by processing a cursor twice to first load and process the records in a sorted list and then to write the values back to the table based on the sorted list.  I prefer the two cursor method, since ordering the records on disk is much slower than reading them in their default order and then sorting them in an in-memory list.  My solution in my next post uses a cursor to first read and sort the sequentially numbered data and then uses the Field Calculator to do the write operation in place of a second cursor.

I am printing many pages of tickets. Each page has 5 tickets and I would like to sequentially put a number on each ticket. I have found a way to make the field calculator do ordered sequential numbers based on values contained in the table fields using the principles I outlined for Creating Labels Based with Related Table Data using a global dictionary variable.  The key to maintaining the speed of the code is to only read the table/layer data into the sorted list and dictionary when the dictionary is empty so that the data is only read and sorted once.  Here is a sample for one of my tables:

Notice here that we need to surround CaseNumber with Single quotes since it’s a Text datatype. As in the other scenarios, The NZ function automatically restarts the sequence when a new CaseNumber is used. In this scenario we would want to check whether the CaseNumber has been entered before generating the sequence.

Otherwise, you could, instead of a merge, use a page of labels with six SEQ fields set for different sequences and with an interval of 6. The first page would be your initial set of fields with numbering 1, 35, 69, 103, 137, and 171.

In this tutorial, we’ll explain how to do an easy setup in InDesign for automatically numbered raffle tickets. We will look at the handy “Data Merge Tool,” which is a great time-saver. Let’s jump into this quick tutorial!

Remember that you must update the values in the sheet if you want to continue the numbering series with the next batch of tickets. For instance, if you want your next batch of tickets to start with 112, you’d open the workbook and change the value 100 to 112, and update the remaining values accordingly. Don’t forget to save the workbook after updating the values.

I’m not sure which version of InDesign first introduced printing Thumbnails like this, but even if yours doesn’t support that, your printer driver may have a similar feature of its own. Check the printer’s own dialog box by clicking “Setup…” near the bottom left corner of the Print dialog and dismissing the warning, then clicking “Preferences…” in Windows’s Print dialog that comes up (I’m not sure how to access this on Mac OS X, but I’m pretty sure there’s an easy way). For instance, on many HP printers, the feature you want is called “Pages per sheet” and has a drop-down offering 1, 2, 4, 9, or 16 pages per sheet.

I think you misunderstood me.  After you press the print button, Acrobat sends the print job off to the printer. This is what I meant by outside Acrobat.  You always print outside Acrobat, because Acrobat is not a print driver.

It will save you time if you find yourself in a situation where you need to be sequentially numbering text objects, okay? It’s going to save you lots of time. It’s awesome. Give it a try. For larger numbers, increase the interval between each sequence and use that number of pages. What I suggested is based on 34 pages of 6 so the interval is 34. For each additional page of 6 you would increase that interval between the starting numbers by one.

This is about the 4th time I’ve ordered ticket from you and each time I’ve been impressed with the quality and rapid turn around. But we still seem to have problems with the size of the logo on the back; would like it to be larger than the finished product. Maybe we can get it next year!

If you need to apply numbering within a paragraph rather than to the entire paragraph, you use Word’s ListNum feature. Using the ListNum feature will allow you to take advantage of the numbering system you’re currently using in your document (it will use the one you implemented most recently if you’re not currently using a numbering system). The ListNum Field is available in Word 97 and later and interacts with multi-level list numbering (which should be linked to styles as set forth here). Here is a brief explanation of differences between the ListNum field and the Seq field.

For example, if you used Tracking Number as the column heading for the list of tracking numbers in your spreadsheet, locate Tracking Number. If the number happens to reset with a new user on a different computer that is fine. I have decided that each user will have another field to enter their initials or a number unique only to them that will prevent confusion on duplicate numbers. Scott, I had posted on Microsoft and you sent me to your blog to have the numbering system (similar to APEX example) explained. I am not a programmer and I don’t understand where these codes and expressions are even suppose to go in access. When I do try to implement the little I do know I continue to get errors. Note: These numbers are not automatically updated when you add, move, or remove rows. You can manually update the sequential numbering by selecting two numbers that are in the right sequence, and then dragging the fill handle to the end of the numbered range.

Open your Layers window. If it is not already open, open it by going to (Window > Layers). Rename the layer with the placed pdf ‘Background’ and then create a new layer and name it ‘Numbering’. Lock the ‘Background’ layer. Then select the ‘Numbering’ Layer.

Click that, and a placeholder will appear where your cursor was, which will later insert the ticket number at that point. Do that twice for each ticket (once for the counterfoil, once for the main ticket). You should end up with something like this:

Ugh okay though the number shows up when I move or type in another field (First_name field) than clicking generate. When I click generate it doesn’t give the number. how can i fix it? here’s what I did:

I have a table named Artifact Catalog in which there is a field Collection Point ID and a field Artifact ID. On the form I have created the user will input the Collection Point ID, for example: 2-1050. I need to find a way to have this Collection Point ID automatically generate a corresponding Artifact ID, i.e when you click the save button the first record under Artifact ID becomes: 2-1050.1 and the second becomes 2-1050.2 and so on.

The last two arguments are optional.  They are a starting number for the sequence and the increment amount.  By default these are 0 and 1 respectively.  If you are processing only part of a layer to extend an existing numbering series then the start argument should be set to the last number already used by the preexisting series.  If you want to increment by steps other than 1 you can modify the increment parameter.

In the example I explained, I was using a list, but did it with un-linked text boxes using “continue from previous number” and “continue numbers across stories.” I’m guessing that there is no way to tell InDesign that even though there are 4 text boxes on the page, that there are two different lists? I’d probably have to just create two threaded stories for that scenario to work.

It’s also a good idea to create your print file with more Tickets (more Books) than you initially think you’ll need. You can then easily print more Tickets if needed later, without having to re-create the print file with extra Books.

The auto-indenting feature of bullets and lists has always frustrated me. EVERY time you apply a numbered or bulleted list, you’ve got to set the indents. I want my lists to be indented at the very left of the page, flush with the rest of the paragraphs. But no, Microsoft insists that you want them indented by 0.63cm and hanging at 1.27cm (WHY 0.63? Why not 0.7? Or 1.0cm? But that’s a question for a different session.) (I know, it’s because MS is American and still uses inches etc…)

I’ve managed to edit one using Find and Replace with an { SEQ } field as the replacement to give sequential numbering. This started from 1 which is fine. Subsequent xml’s where I’ve tried to use { SEQ \r n } to get numbering starting from other than 1 results in multiple occurrences of the number as defined by n. It’s this way even after updating the fields.

To enter specific sequential number codes, such as purchase order numbers, you can use the ROW function together with the TEXT function.
