Enter the number that precedes the number that the system uses as the first number in the next numbering scheme. For example, if you enter 99, the system uses 100 as the first number in the next numbering scheme for the legal document type that you specify.
If the list you want is as simple as “1”, “2”, “3”, you’ll appreciate how easy it is to apply this type of numbering in legal documents. Simple numbered lists are different in Word 2000 than they were in Word 97. In Word 2000, the default for even the most basic list is multi-level. For example, if you number an item and press Enter and then press the TAB key, Word automatically formats this number as the second level in an outline numbered list format. Single and multi-level numbering are explained later in this chapter.
I notice that documents are the place people go to find answers, but not all people. My customer would just ask me the question instead of looking it up. I’m much more intimate with the document, so I can find the information much easier than they can. The question I get more than, “What does the system do?” is “Why does the system do that?”.
To apply the master page with the automatic numbering to the document pages, go to the Page panel. Apply document numbering in word master page to a single page by dragging the master page icon to a page icon in the Pages panel. When a black rectangle surrounds the page, release the mouse button.
Once I worked with a company of less than 100 people, manufacturing fairly simple devices. Their documentation system consisted of a few numeration systems depending on the type of document. One of the procedures had a number 0000057-001, which they simply called “fifty seven.” A drawing was numbered 327-856-99-17. Some companies obviously want to feel like the “big boys.” If numbers are long and complicated, one might think that they make complex and important products.
First, create a numbering “list” by choosing Type > Bulleted & Numbered Lists > Define Lists. Then click New to create a new list. You can name it anything you want, but make sure the Continued Numbers across Stories is enabled:

Let’s start with the settings for the Chapter title style. Note the list name (FM Numbering), the level (1), the format (1, 2, 3, 4…), the all-important numbering style (Chapter ^H: ), the mode (continue from previous number) and restart numbers at this level is on (and can’t be turned off for level 1).
You use the Issue Place program (P7400004) to set up codes to represent the locations where legal documents are issued. For example, if the company issues documents from a general office and from a warehouse, you set up codes to represent each of these locations. You do not need to set up issue places unless you issue legal documents from more than one location.

Very, very helpful. When working on a shared drive, I notice that people can intuitively process your suggestion. I’ve noticed that most people try to do it, but because the syntax isn’t documented and standardized, they waffle and we wind up with 1.0 Final, 1.0 New Final, 1.0 Final Final.
Hello. I have a document/book which has got different masterpages applied wit different characteristics. On some of these masterpages I set the page numbering which when I open the masterpage shows as an A. The question is: How can I start the page numbering lets say from page 100 without it to appear in the previous pages. I tried with the numbering and section option but it didn’t work. Thank Y

Who was it who said that procedures and forms had to be numbered? It eludes us, but we would like to give them a kick in the pants. Almost every Company that already has an in-house management system or one they outsourced has the whole thing numbered from start to end and even we are guilty of it.
You can also insert a page number inside existing artistic or paragraph text. If the text is located on a local layer, the page number is inserted on the current page only. If the text is located on a master layer, the page number becomes part of the master layer and appears on all pages where the master layer is visible. For more information about artistic and paragraph text, see Adding and manipulating text.
Maia: Check the very first New Section settings using Numbering & Section Options in the Pages panel — if you haven’t defined any sections of your own, there’s always one at the first page of your document.
Create the sample label so that it has the word Exhibit followed by a merge field that represents the number being pulled from the Excel worksheet. Make sure the label contents are formatted the way you need them.
For legal documents that you print from the JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Sales Order Management system, you must set up corresponding versions for the legal documents in the country-specific programs for the legal documents and in the Print Invoices program (R42565). A corresponding version is a version with an identical name. You set up the corresponding versions in addition to completing the steps to set up legal numbering and associate print templates with legal document types.
Which reminds me – is there a way to insert a document into another? I’ve been opening my template, copying it, and then pasting it at the end of the previous case. I’d rather just bring it in directly.
If an unwanted character appears at the beginning of the page number (so that, for example, a jump line reads “Cont’d on page A16” instead of “Cont’d on page 16”), you probably included a section prefix in the Numbering & Section Options dialog box. Turn off or edit the prefix.
The official document number is used for documents such as invoices that are issued to end customers and also presented to the tax authorities. These official numbers are usually in a format defined explicitly by the respective governments or controlling authorities and can consist of numbers and letters.

To “manually” insert a page number, position the insertion point where you want the page number to appear, and then choose Format > Page > Insert Page Number. In the Insert Page Number dialog box (see Figure 2), the Page option is already selected, so you simply choose Insert to insert the page number. Notice that you can also use this dialog box to insert chapter or volume numbers.

It then advances to showing you how to insert chapter and volume numbers, add page numbers to headers and footers, create customized page numbers, and suppress the page numbers so that they don’t print on certain pages.
The Current Page Number is a special character inserted in a text frame on a page or master page (recommended) where the page number will appear, by selecting Type>Insert Special Character>Markers>Current Page Number. You can put as many of these special characters on a page as you’d like and they will all pick up the current page number.
Warning Some people like to use BACKSPACE to remove numbering. This method does remove the number but leaves the cursor indented to whichever level you happened to be in, especially in Outline Numbered paragraphs. The two methods mentioned above will remove the number and restore your cursor to the left margin.
