That doesn’t mean I use a formal template for every document. Sometimes it’s as simple as adding the version number to the file name, rather than inserting an explicit document control section within the document, and it takes seconds to do.

The official document number is used for documents such as invoices that are issued to end customers and also presented to the tax authorities. These official numbers are usually in a format defined explicitly by the respective governments or controlling authorities and can consist of numbers and letters.
Duplicating Function. Some programs enable you to press one key in a specific field to duplicate the information contained in the same field in a prior record. For example, if you typed in ABC Purchase Contract in the TYPE field of your prior document record, then, when you are at the TYPE field in a subsequent record, press the appropriate key and the TYPE will be duplicated in the second record automatically. This is used most effectively while objectively coding documents.
Previously I could choose a large paper size on my printer select fit to page and the document would scale up to printer out on paper large than than the design page. When I try this with X6 the image disappears. Is this a known bug?
Sophisticated Numbering System. Many document-coding systems will utilize letters and numbers for a specific document to provide additional information about it. Below are some possibilities for a document coding system:
So version 1.0 gets updated to version 1.1, and maybe version 1.2, and so on. But at this point it’s never clear (to me at least) whether version 1.1 is a draft for approval or an approved update to version 1.1. In order to be sure, I have to open the document and check the version history, and even then, authors are sometimes not rigorous enough to state explicitly whether the document amendment is signed off or not.
If a runtime error happens when you run the program, the numbering data that is being processed might be locked. Further data posting or processing is not allowed. To unlock the data, access lock management on the SAP Easy Access screen under Administration System Administration Monitor Lock Entries . Go back to the document numbering in word shortcut menu and this time select Format Page Numbers… In the resulting dialog select the option Start this section with: and enter 1 as your page number. Click OK to confirm and you are done.
Use the Numbering & Section Options dialog box to change the page numbering style to use a different format. You can also use this dialog box to restart page numbering or to start page numbering at a number you specify.
If the list you want is as simple as “1”, “2”, “3”, you’ll appreciate how easy it is to apply this type of numbering in legal documents. Simple numbered lists are different in Word 2000 than they were in Word 97. In Word 2000, the default for even the most basic list is multi-level. For example, if you number an item and press Enter and then press the TAB key, Word automatically formats this number as the second level in an outline numbered list format. Single and multi-level numbering are explained later in this chapter.
Click on the “Paragraph Style” panel to change the appearance of your page numbers to the visual style you would like. When you change the style on the master page “A,” it will change all the numbers’ styles.
Once I worked with a company of less than 100 people, manufacturing fairly simple devices. Their documentation system consisted of a few numeration systems depending on the type of document. An overwhelming majority of companies use designation-based part-numbering systems. A Design Management Procedure, for example, may be numbered as SOP 4.4-1. With the previous revision of the ISO 9001 standard, it meant that this document related to the element 4.4, design management. Well, it does not mean the same with the new ISO 9001 revision, simply because design management clause now has a different number: 7.3. What is the solution? The solution is simple: no part numbers, and no designators!
Once you’re back in the Modify Style dialog box, don’t be in a hurry to click OK. First, uncheck the Automatically Update option (at the bottom right). You don’t want Word to automatically update any styles in your numbering scheme. Once you’ve unchecked this option (if necessary), click OK.
The quickest way to insert a page number is to choose a preset position at the top or the bottom of a page. Choose Format > Page > Numbering. In the Select Page Numbering Format dialog box (see Figure 1), the default location is Bottom Center, which places a page number centered at the bottom of every page.
Never expect users to rely solely on the document numbers to locate them and make sure you provide and use search tools where possible. Ensure you teach your staff how to use whatever search facilities you have in place – these are critical to the success of your system and should be included as part of Management System training.
