Word uses styles to create Tables of Contents. A common practice in law firms is to generate outline numbered styles that have bold or underlined heading text immediately followed by paragraph text on the same line. Because the paragraph is formatted with a style, Word tries to place the entire paragraph in the Table of Contents.
Select this check box to allow the system to print the banking information of the company on the legal document. You specify the details of the banking information in the Bank Connections for Legal Document program (P700050).
(POL and RUS) The system does not print the total number of pages on the legal documents for Poland and Russia, so you can leave this field blank. The system ignores any value that you enter in this field when you print Polish or Russian legal documents.
In this video, I demonstrate how to generate a new number in sequence starting from whatever number you want. This would work for invoices, tickets, and other documents where numbers needed to be tracked. There is a text file that tracks the number that can be stored on a network if multiple people need to have access to the document.
Baking: to specify which business division this document relates to. We have several divisions (dairy, baking, grocery). For general procedure that applies to all, e.g., hand washing then we would use ‘Group’.
Got a version of Word that uses the menu interface (Word 97, Word 2000, Word 2002, or Word 2003)? This site is for you! If you use a later version of Word, visit our WordTips site focusing on the ribbon interface.
You’ll need to merge two documents: the Publisher document, or ticket, and an Excel workbook that contains the numbers you want to use to number those tickets. Please don’t let the term mail merge intimidate you. Merging a Publisher document to generate sequential numbers is easy.
It provides buttons on the Add-Ins tab of the ribbon which can be used to apply numbering in a variety of formats. The ZIP file contains both the template itself and a self extracting archive file which will attempt to load the template in the default Word Startup folder.
If you want to auto number the unique ID column for each project number(e.g. abc/01, abc/02, def/01), in logic, when new item is saved into library, we have to get the maximum number by retrieving all existing item ID for one particualr project, then plus one, using event receivers should be more flexible.
Now, you’ll define the actual merge values. In this case, it’s the Ticket Numbers field in the selected Excel workbook. Drag the Ticket Numbers field from the merge pane to the document (Figure G). After dropping the field control, I pressed [Enter] to replace Microsoft with the <
I completely understand the desire to make it look logical and sequential and user/auditor-friendly. And at first, the numbering system seems ideal. As others have pointed out – and as you’ve realized – things change, organizations evolve and so too does the documentation. Rather than become caught up in the numbering, focus on who owns the documentation, the document control process and the method by which documents are created as new processes come into play.
I have the first sheet with numbers up to 80. Now, how do you go from 80 to the next 160 for the next sheet? Once it gets to what should be 90 on the second sheet, it goes to 810 and so on. It adds a “0” to the same numbers.
This is amazing. I do not understand why Word does not have an easier way to do this, and does not give you their own directions. My boss wants me to fix the numbered styles in the document and you saved me.

So set up your Table of Contents dialog box to gather the paragraph styles you want to include (part titles, chapter titles, and perhaps main headings), then make sure the Include Book Documents box is checked, and click OK.
I notice that documents are the place people go to find answers, but not all people. My customer would just ask me the question instead of looking it up. I’m much more intimate with the document, so I can find the information much easier than they can. The question I get more than, “What does the system do?” is “Why does the system do that?”.
Click the plus sign at the bottom of the panel to open the Add Documents dialog box. Navigate to your chapter documents and select them all at once (select the first one, press Shift, then select the last one), then click Open. Now the documents will all be shown in your Book file. Save the Book file by clicking the Save the Book icon at the bottom of the panel (second from the left). Here is what our Book Design Made Simple panel looks like:
My issue is trying to create small dot labels or equivalent to make up sequential alpha numeric labels to identify each individual item that I have in my shop, retrospectively. I have possibly 6-8thousand individual items that need coding for stock take purposes yet I can find no outlet that supply such thing. Do you have any suggestions. My line is antiques/collectables, predominantly china with items ranging in size from 2-3cm to 5/600cm. I would be most grateful for any solutions or suggestions. Best regards. Pete.
A best practice that we recommend to our clients is to create a base/folio master –with styled and positioned footers and current page number special characters– on which all other masters are based. This allows a footer that may contain date or issue information to be updated once and the changes are reflected in all of the master pages. If your masters only have current page number special characters then you can just add them to each master and the page numbers will be reflected when each master is applied to your document pages.
When you apply a list using the buttons, you are not applying a style. If you drop down the styles list, does it show “List Number” as the style in use? On my computer it shows the same style I started with, i.e. Body Text. When you apply a list number style directly, from the Styles list, do your changes to that style apply?
For example, a document with the number 1A1A001 would mean the document was provided by Plaintiff Adams, is located in the warehouse, was received pursuant to Defendant’s request to produce dated November 16, 1981, and the document number is A001.
Using properly a standrd usualy solves 99% of problems. Not doing that generates “new revolutionary methods” of doing what one is supose to do in the first place (see “agile” and PMBok; PMBok states that a PM should manage team, time and change requirements in most efective and efficient way – using various tools. Most PM’s dont do that – so they invented agile!)
In either case, the software will ensure that the control number is unique to the document. When used, document control numbers are mandatory. Control numbers must be assigned to a document when it’s added to the software and are unable to be modified later.
XXX is a three or four digit number assigned to a specific record. These can be assigned in groups to manage related documents as document numbering in word as the same NUMBER can be issued, for example, for an SOP and a PR.
Larger documents like books and reports may benefit from being split up into sections. In this example we’ll create two simple sections for a short book. Section I will consist of introductory pages and be set in roman numerals, i – vi. Section II will be made up of the main pages of the book, set in standard numbers, from 1 – 10.
IF a document is part of a book and the previous document ended on a right-hand page, AND if your book options are set to allow documents to start on left or right pages, AND if you choose “Automatic Page Numbering,” THEN the document will be allowed to automatically start on the left page. This is great if you need to break a document up in a spot where it’s not necessary for the next document to start on the right.
I want to make 300 numbered tickets for an event. The number on one side must match the number on the stub end that is given to the ticket holder. What is the best way to set up a document to do this without having to manually enter 300 numbers?
If the document control field is auto-generated, the value is not displayed when adding the document. To avoid the possibility that two users might be creating a new document control number at the same time the number is only created and viewed after the document has been added to the library.
Creating Long Documents with InDesign shows designers how to plan, create, and output book-length documents using InDesign CC features and third-party plugins. Publishing veteran Mike Rankin focuses on long-document elements such as page and chapter numbering, tables of contents, cross-references, and indexes. The course also provides strategies and best practices for document construction, from creating master pages and applying consistent formatting with styles, to placing text and images and outputting to both print and interactive PDF.
There is also provision that is available in the Title Block where all the three numbers can be specified and hence, each of the agencies involved in the project can track the documents with respect to their own document numbers. The sole purpose of the document number is to uniquely identify the document and as long as this objective is fulfilled the said numbering system is considered as OK for the project.
Let’s move on to the Subhead 1 style. Note the same list name (FM Numbering), the level designation (now it’s a 2), the number (^H.^2.^t) and that restart numbers at this level is on after any previous level.
The key question for version 1.1 is whether it will be released. Every change should (I say must) be approved, otherwise we are accumulating a series of unapproved changes for some future approval and release. If one does the latter, then 1.1 cannot be released and it is considered an internal interim version. To do this well requires a change/release/document control log (whatever we want to call it).
First, create a numbering “list” by choosing Type > Bulleted & Numbered Lists > Define Lists. Then click New to create a new list. You can name it anything you want, but make sure the Continued Numbers across Stories is enabled:
Note The “Rog” in this example is the name of the Interrogatory numbering scheme. This name will keep this numbering scheme unique from any other schemes that may be running in the document. See Tip below for more information.
