One of the reasons for using letters instead of numbers is to combat the problem you describe – it reduces the potential for confusion between e.g. “Issue 2 Draft 3” and the more traditional “Version 2.3”. But as you say, it’s not perfect. Unless you want to call it “Draft 3 Towards Issue 2” – but that’s a bit too wordy!
When you’re working on a document such as a magazine or a book with many pages in it, using the master page feature in Adobe InDesign CC 2015 to insert automatic page numbering simplifies working with the document. On a master page, you designate the position, font, and size of the page numbers and any additional text you want to accompany the numbers such as the magazine name, date or the word “Page.” Then that information appears on every page of the document along with the correct page number.
Microsoft Word does not support multiple heading-numbering schemes in a single document or master document. When you work with documents that contain both chapter headings and appendix headings, the headings must not use the same heading style level.
If you know in advance that you need outline numbering for your paragraphs, you will want to choose the correct format from the Bullets and Numbering dialog box. Applying one of the preset formats to a paragraph or paragraphs that are already bulleted or numbered applies it to the entire list. There is a specific tab for outline numbers — the Outlined Numbered tab.
Select None from the Underline drop-down list. There is a big difference in leaving something blank and choosing None. Blank means that it will follow the formatting of the text. None ensures that the number will never be underlined regardless of text formatting.
Creating Long Documents with InDesign shows designers how to plan, create, and output book-length documents using InDesign CC features and third-party plugins. Publishing veteran Mike Rankin focuses on long-document elements such as page and chapter numbering, tables of contents, cross-references, and indexes. The course also provides strategies and best practices for document construction, from creating master pages and applying consistent formatting with styles, to placing text and images and outputting to both print and interactive PDF.
To access the header and footer in your selected master page, click the “Show Header/Footer” button in the “Header & Footer” button group. Your insertion marker will be placed at the left edge of the header or footer each time you click this button. You can then use the “Tab” key on your keyboard to tab to the center or right tab within the header or footer, if desired. Once your insertion marker is at the desired location, click the “Insert Page Number” button in the “Header & Footer” button group to insert a page number into the text box. You can also click the “Insert Date” or “Insert Time” buttons in the “Header & Footer” button group to insert date or time stamps into the text box at the indicated locations. You can also simply type your own custom header and footer information, if desired. Once you have entered your custom header and footer information, click into the page area to quit editing the headers and footers.
We are now going to create the adjacent page number. However we need to switch back to the selection tool first (Escape + V). In my document I have set the left hand page up first. So, instead of going through the steps again, to place the right hand number we will simply copy (Command + C) and paste (Command + V) the text box you have just formatted.
Hi Victor, it may be because your master page item (page numbers) are hidden by other items. You could try solving this by creating a new layer, moving it to the top of the layer order if necessary, and putting the page numbers on this top layer. I usually have one layer at the top reserved just for master-page items. Hope this helps. 🙂
There you have it, how to easily number pages in an InDesign document. Once you learn this feature you will love http://thedailyrant.net Auto numbering takes the stress out of proof reading and editing documents later and will leave you with more time for the things you do best… creating!
Tip Using the same logic for removing underlining from a number, you can make the paragraph number bold without having the text of the paragraph formatted as bold. In the Customize window of the Bullets and Numbering dialog box, choose the applicable level and click Font. Select Bold, and click OK twice.
Not a chance—InDesign offers a number of improvements and surprises in the area of typesetting. In this chapter, we’ll start with character formatting (font, point size, kerning, and baseline shift are examples of character formatting), move on to paragraph formatting (indents, tabs, space above and below, and composition), and then dive into formatting using character and paragraph styles. Along the way, there may be a joke or two.
Numbering System Only – You may decide to number your documents and images using a numerical system from A00001 through A10000. Thus, all the documents in the case would be given a number between A00001 and A10000. Your numbering system must always contain the same number of numerical and/or alphabetical digits. In some programs, you must put zeros before the number up to the greatest number that you will be coding. For example, if you are coding up to the number A10000, then you must put in four zeros before the number one for your first document, i.e., your first document will have the number A00001. The computer reads the document number from left to right, so if you enter the number 12, it will be retrieved before the number 2, since it reads the first column of the document number first.
i have been working on this project in corel draw12 for several weeks now, as it is or/was coming to its final stages a few days ago it now only opens a blank page, it is 2.14 gb and it will get bigger as it reaches its final stages.i can still see it in preview. when it was opening it took a very long time to open i realise the reason for this is the size im using very high resolution images and designing and editing, or maybe there is another program that you may recommend that will support the size so i can complete my work.
This chapter (web page) takes you through how numbering is supposed to work in Word and the various controls. It is useful, but primarily on SEQ fields and simple numbered lists and also as reference showing the menus, dialogs and controls and going through the concepts for outline numbering. To actually set up outline numbering that works, refer to the Kelly and McGhie articles.
It’s easy to enter a SEQ field manually. Begin by pressing [Ctrl]+[F9]. When Word displays the blank field, enter seq list1, as shown in Figure A. List1 is a required argument; you can use any descriptive name you like as long as it begins with an alpha character. The parentheses distinguish the numbers within the text. They’re not part of the field code. Highlight the field code and press [F9] to display the field’s value. As you can see in Figure B, the first field returns (1).
If you’re changing the numbering options for any page other than the first page of the document, make sure that Start Section is selected. This option marks the selected page as the beginning of a new section.
Create an Excel worksheet that has as many numbers in it as you need. For instance, if you need 175 labels, you would place a title in cell A1 (such as “Number”) and the 175 numbers you need in cells A2 through A176. Make sure you save the workbook.
Here you go. If say I open a new project to any page size of my choice and import any image (any size) into the page. Is there a way I can automatically fit the page to the image size in either CorelDraw X5or PhotoPaint X3? That is, if my default page size is letter (8.5″x11″) and I import an image that is 2.2″x5″, can I automatically fit the default page to the fit the image at 2.2″x5″? Really very handy too. Can I also do the reverse image to paper size? If I can do either, where do I go?
The document management system automatically assigns a unique number to every single document that is added to FileHold. This number called the: FileHold ID Number. This number can be added to the document electronically and (coming soon) even printed on the document.
