CK Note: Word 2007 – 2013 interface has an different automatic numbering scheme which I have been told is much less subject to corruption. Microsoft Word 2010 Bible by Herb Tyson, MVP. However numbering is still very imperfect in these later versions. I still recommend following Shauna Kelly’s step-by-step instructions (see above) if setting up numbering in a template or in a document likely to be heavily edited. If you start without doing this and end up with “spaghetti numbering,” fixing it will be a very large chore!
Select None from the Underline drop-down list. There is a big difference in leaving something blank and choosing None. Blank means that it will follow the formatting of the text. None ensures that the number will never be underlined regardless of text formatting.
There’s an old Steve Martin joke about how to make a million dollars which starts, “First, get a million dollars…” That’s the key to this trick, too: First, get a bunch of numbers. Here’s a file with 1,197 numbers in it. Now import or paste those numbers into a thread so that the numbers appear in the right place. If you need two matching numbers, just import it twice.
The method below was inspired by code developed by fellow MVP Doug Robbins and reproduced in a web page he developed for the now defunct MVP FAQ site. The number sequence is stored in an editable text file called Settings.ini which is stored here in the Word startup folder and displayed by a docvariable field inserted in the header by the macro.
Word gives you the ability to customize numbered lists you create. Click “Home,” highlight the paragraphs you converted into a list and then click the Paragraph dialog box launcher located in the ribbon’s Paragraph section. A Paragraph window with adjustment settings opens. Remove the check mark from http://thedailyrant.net “Don’t Add Space Between Paragraphs of the Same Style” check box and click “OK.” Word restores the line spacing between your paragraphs.
Tip: Word automatically numbers every page, but you can change that if you want to. For example, if you don’t want the page number to appear on the first page of your document, double-click or double-tap near the top or bottom of a page to open the Header & Footer Tools Design tab, and select Different First Page. For more options, choose Insert > Page Number > Format Page Numbers.
This allows you to reset the auto-insertion of page numbers for each section of the publication. For example, if you need to skip a page, insert a section beginning with that page and choose Insert->Page Numbers and remove the check box for “insert page number on first page”. This will cause that particular page to skip, as it is the “first” page of the new section.
In this example, I will create a set of plates that will be put on each classroom door in a local high school. All plates will have the same logo, but each plate will have a different classroom number and subject.
Suppose you’ve made some changes to the styles or swatches in your chapter 5 document, and now you want to use those updated styles or swatches throughout your book. Click in the column to the left of chapter 5 to set chapter 5 as your book’s style source. Select all the other documents that you want to synchronize to chapter 5 by pressing Ctrl/Cmd and clicking the documents (they’ll turn blue when selected).
CK Note: I strongly recommend reading the following article. It may save your sanity (or at least your job). See Word’s Numbering Explained by John McGhie. Somewhat easier reading and still very useful are Shauna Kelly’s articles (see above) on outline numbering and bullets.
My name is Simona Pfreundner, and I’m an independent graphic designer based in Montreal, Canada. I am a very creative woman with a big love for illustration, speak three languages, and solve problems with visual solutions in a colorful way.
The auto-indenting feature of bullets and lists has always frustrated me. EVERY time you apply a numbered or bulleted list, you’ve got to set the indents. I want my lists to be indented at the very left of the page, flush with the rest of the paragraphs. But no, Microsoft insists that you want them indented by 0.63cm and hanging at 1.27cm (WHY 0.63? Why not 0.7? Or 1.0cm? But that’s a question for a different session.) (I know, it’s because MS is American and still uses inches etc…)
i’m new in Smoke, and in the first time i’m learning the conform and editing tools, one thing i’m looking for is how to sequential rename my shots in the timeline, i found this article in the forum but it’s for the 2012 and i didn’t found this tool in the 2013 version. URL….
The add-in, in DOTM template format, is intended to be filed in the Word startup folder and thus load with Word. If you have not changed the preferred startup folder it can be located (in English language versions of Windows) by typing
Sorry, didn’t catch that you didn’t want the first page to be counted at all. I imagine X4 doesn’t have the handy “Page number settings” option that X6 has? (X6 has Layout > Insert Page Number, followed by Layout > Page Number Settings) – Alicja Z Aug 7 ’14 at 19:41
Thanks endlessly for this site and thorough explanation. I was going crazy over a basic oversight and had been reading all the tips I came across, it was not until I read your explanation that my mind lit up. Thank you again!
Globalization Partners International provides many services for document translation and website translation, which involve multilingual desktop publishing services. This list below highlights some of the more common products used in such projects:
Once I worked with a company of less than 100 people, manufacturing fairly simple devices. Their documentation system consisted of a few numeration systems depending on the type of document. One of the procedures had a number 0000057-001, which they simply called “fifty seven.” A drawing was numbered 327-856-99-17. Some companies obviously want to feel like the “big boys.” If numbers are long and complicated, one might think that they make complex and important products.
In the Customizing activity Assign Customer-Specific Classes to Countries, you can assign a customer-specific class to a country for which ODN is already activated. You can also activate ODN with number groups for additional countries by entering the country and the corresponding customer-specific class. In the customer-specific class, you can define that the business place is also used to determine the relevant number range.
Enter the total number of rows that fit in the detail section of the document’s middle pages when you print a document with more than two pages. You specify this value so that the system calculates the total number of pages used to print a document. If you do not complete this field, the system uses the value that you enter in the Detail Section Total Number of Rows field as the number of rows for the first page.
Creating a sequential list of numbers, in Word, sounds like an intimidating task. Sure, you can create a numbered list quickly enough, but that feature works with additional text – you’re numbering something. If you want a list of just numbers, you have to work a bit harder. Word’s SEQ field might come to mind, but that solution is better suited to template-type numbering. In order words, this field works great if you’re numbering documents, labels, and so on. It doesn’t work so well if you just want to create a list of sequential numbers. You can use it that way, but it’ll be more work than it’s worth.
Of course, there are third-party solutions that are available for creating sequentially numbered labels. One that comes highly recommended by several WordTips subscribers is Bates Labels from Payne Consulting (http://www.payneconsulting.com). This free Word template allows you to easily create as many labels as you need for a specific purpose.
Enter the maximum number of characters to print in an attachment line. If the attachment line has fewer characters than the value that you enter, the system prints the attachment text on one line. If the attachment line has more characters than the value that you enter, the system prints the attachments on multiple lines, up to the number of lines that you specify in the Nbr of Rows for SO Attachments field or the Nbr of Rows for Line Attachments field.
Document IDs help you manage your documents by providing an easy way to track items regardless of their location. For example, if a legal contract gets moved from a document library on one site to a document library on another site, the contract would be easy to locate based on its Document ID. Document ID’s are automatically assigned to uploaded documents and this ID will follow the item throughout its entire life cycle. Document IDs can also be assigned to Document Sets.
i have been working on this project in corel draw12 for several weeks now, as it is or/was coming to its final stages a few days ago it now only opens a blank page, it is 2.14 gb and it will get bigger as it reaches its final stages.i can still see it in preview. when it was opening it took a very long time to open i realise the reason for this is the size im using very high resolution images and designing and editing, or maybe there is another program that you may recommend that will support the size so i can complete my work.
The fastest way to get numbers into your document is to click the Numbering button on the Formatting toolbar. This button gives you either Word’s default numbering scheme in your document (1, 2, 3) or the last numbering scheme used during this session of Word. Word’s default numbers are Arabic numerals followed by a period.
Type the starting number for your document or for the first page of the current section. For example, if you want to restart the numbering for a section, type 1 . The remaining pages in the section will be renumbered accordingly.
However, using Styles with Numbering can make this a little less annoying. Once your document is complete, the last step should be to fix the tab and update the style. It will at least prevent you from having to change each paragraph individually.
I need a running number from 1001-1200, so after I apply the print merge, it creates 200pgs of the voucher. When I try to save this file, it takes almost half an hour to do so.I think this is due to the heavy file size?In addition, the local print shop knows nothing about print merge and imposition, so I have to prepare the artwork readily in A3 size to print. The imposition creates a 10pgs files.I wanted to save this as PDF to preserve the color, but it turned out to be a nightmare (in daytime) for me that it takes more than2 hours to generate the 10pgs PDF.
Each document in your book can be numbered, and these numbers can be used as automatic chapter numbers. Automatic will increment from the previous document’s number, or you can choose “Same as Previous in Book” if it’s still the same chapter but broken into two or more parts, or you can arbitrarily number it anything you want to. This can save time if you have a large number of chapters that change order frequently, since the numbers will update automatically.
The quickest way to insert a page number is to choose a preset position at the top or the bottom of a page. Choose Format > Page > Numbering. In the Select Page Numbering Format dialog box (see Figure 1), the default location is Bottom Center, which places a page number centered at the bottom of every page.
XXX is a three or four digit number assigned to a specific record. These can be assigned in groups to manage related documents as well as the same NUMBER can be issued, for example, for an SOP and a PR.
To ensure each number fills its own text frame, select the whole story (Command/Ctrl-A), open the Keep Options (Command/Ctrl-Option/Alt-K) and choose In Next Frame from the Start Paragraph pop-up menu.
